Heartless reader comments said a hit-and-run victim's life wasn't worth saving. A journalist decided to pay proper respects.

Read this all the way through and you won't forget it.

I read an article on the NY Daily News site the other day about a couple here in NE that duct taped their 22 month old to the wall while they were getting drunk, and high.  Most of the comments were from people laughing at how funny they thought a 22 month old struggling to get at a sippy cup taped just out of reach was.

People make me sick.

We are certainly struggling from a lack of decency in this country, that is for sure.

Fuuuu...

These sorts of things are why I don't watch the news or read the news or listen to the news except for traffic/weather or go outside ever.  Occasionally I'll check in on the state of the world at large, but I have to be careful.

Not that I'm arguing for this kind of thing, but you'd see a pretty drastic turn in decency on the internet if you required people to post using their multipass.

It's nice to see someone pick out a stupid troll comment and point out how retarded it is.

Someone basically got away with murder, and people laughed. He wasn't in the monkeysphere, so they don't care. It used to be that the fact you didn't know that people were dying horribly every day kept you sane. Now it seems that since we do know, the proper response is to mock them.

Proper mockery should go to the manager of the place -

Quote
"I'll probably go through another 10 people to find somebody like him," said Tyrone Dayhoff, 53, the Crab Shack's manager.

Dude worked there for 10 years and was only making minimum wage - if he was that much of an asset, maybe the manager should have paid him accordingly.

Hell, if he was that awesome, the pay raise might have been enough for him to afford a car, and he wouldn't have been killed riding home on a bicycle.

You missunderstood. The manager meant that he will have a hard time willing to find another guy willing to work for ten years for minimum wage without ever bitching about it.

We must all remember that while he was working for the current minimum wage, it has gone up 3 times since he started working there 10 years ago. So he probably got at least one raise over the course of working there.

That does not get rid of the assholishness of not paying someone loyal more than a pittance though.

I'm sure that if this awesome amazingly under appreciated dishwasher had asked for a raise the kind hearted manager would have told him, "I can get a kid in here tomorrow that will be happy to take that $7.25.  Now, shut up and get back to washing dishes."

The story makes it sound like the dude was in witness protection. No past, no details, and never talked about himself.

Loyalty doesn't amount to much anymore.  And if your pay goes up accordingly with the years, it's just another incentive to fire you.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

The point is that he wasn't awesome or amazing or particularly underappreciated, but his death mattered.

It mattered to some people right from the start - do you have any idea how fucking expensive it is to replace a bumper when you're shopping around for shops that will ignore blood?

Your reading comprehension sucks.

My point was the hypocrite manager of the restaurant going on about how great this guy was but he never in life saw the guy as a real person.

The writer did a great job of setting that up, using the "I never got a raise" anecdote early in the story.
