Chinese prisoners used as WOW gold farmers.  Liu says he was one of scores of prisoners forced to play online games to build up credits that prison guards would then trade for real money. The 54-year-old, a former prison guard who was jailed for three years in 2004 for "illegally petitioning" the central government about corruption in his hometown, reckons the operation was even more lucrative than the physical labour that prisoners were also forced to do. I don't have much to say about this other than I guess we all expected this to some level. Edit: Does anyone want to gamble about whether this ends up in the Politics board?

Umm... I am not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I think (at face value) it is insanely awesome to be sent to prison to play video games all day. But on my other, bigger hand, I see this as exploitation. I am conflicted... and possibly mentally ill.

I suspect that when you've been out in the fields all day doing whatever manual labor they expect of you, to be chained to a computer for another 12 hours would not be a pleasant experience.

Yeah, INSTEAD of would be nice, ON TOP of blows chunks. Plus farming gold is not actually playing a video game.

It's a modern chain gang. Makes perfect sense. Surprised this took so long to be discovered (or maybe just reported on).
These games don't require that much critical thinking when all you're looking to do is grind for cash or max-level characters you can sell.
