I've gotten a bit bored, and when I check out my unplayed games, nothing much grabs my attention, so I'm looking for some suggestions here. Hopefully some of the games suggested will be ones I have and I can do the whole "oh yeah, that's a good idea" thing. A few criteria though:
1) A console game, not PC. 2) Something finshable - as in play a fun SP campaign for 8-18 hours and you're done unless you want to catass 100% achievements. This disqualifies sports and music games as well as your Tekken/SF type fighting games. 3) No FPS, RTS. I'm occasionally doing a level of CoD4 and Resistance, so that's enough console FPS for now. RTS is a PC-only genre, and I'm shit at them anyway. 4) No third-person sandbox shit. I do like those games, but I need a break from it. Bigtime. Every second console game seems to be in this genre these days. 5) Preferably nothing from 2010. I'm hoping for something I already own to be suggested as a standout, and I haven't really bought anything that's been released this year.
Something that's a usual 8-18 hour finisher will take me about 3-4 weeks no doubt, but it'd be nice to see if I can start and finish a game over a week or so, and have fun doing it...

I think you've managed to eliminate just about everything. The only stuff I can think of off the top of my head are maybe some downloadable games off XBLA (since I know you have a 360) like Shadow Complex, Splosion Man, or Mega Man 9 or 10.

Too Human. It's a larf, totally worth the 60 million dollar budget.

Agree on Too Human, one of the few games I've seen the end of, and can be had on the cheap nowadays. I'm in the same boat that it takes a month for me to finish an 8-18 hour game, so interest fades or is diverted from just about anything that is longer.

I'm playing Darksiders, and it's a surprisingly good Zelda on steroids with God of War fights. Ok, it's from 2010, but I think it can be found rather cheap, it's not a FPS, it's not a sandbox game, just a very good action-adventure game, 15 hours long. At first I found the artistic direction rather unininspiring, but it has grown on me, I sort of dig the post-apocaliptic with demons vibe. The level design is varied, the fights are easy but fun.
Other than that, TPS like Uncharted or Lost Planet are easy to finish. I loved Lost Planet, very capcomish game with huge boss fights.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys - I did want to eliminate a lot of stuff - I just want to be able to play through some stuff and finish it. Next game, play, finish etc and cut down my stack without needing to buy anything new (even XBLA or PSN stuff, unless I already own them). Only problem is the feeling uninspired when I see the unplayed games. I've actually got 2 copies of Too Human, bought dirt cheap to go through co-op with the wife, so I'll save it for that. Darksiders is down as low as AU$50 atm, which is like US$51 - still too expensive though. I do have Lost Planet and Uncharted though, for some reason I thought LP was a FPS and Uncharted was a sandbox. I might give one or both of those a go!

There's no cutscenes in Too Human co-op (60 million well spent!), so you'll miss out on the story if you go that way.

Got it on PC. Except for the half-dozen reasons already outlined above as to why I don't want to play it right now, I'd play it. There's no cutscenes in Too Human co-op (60 million well spent!), so you'll miss out on the story if you go that way.
Is it the kind of game that you can play through twice? Spent a few hours playing CoD4 tonight, on 360. Played and finished it a few times on PC, but wanted to try it out on the big screen TV and see how it goes and looks. Also, it was bloody cheap as a second hand game from some guy on a wargaming forum. CoD4 really had a lot of new, interesting, innovative, fresh ideas in it, as well as a pretty good story and good characters...

I was going to recommend this also. Its long enough to sink your teeth in to, but at the same time short enough to actually finish, the combat is challenging, but not overly complicated, and there are some decent puzzles also. On top of that the story isn't half bad. I see you said you would wait on it. But when you get money, this one is a great little game. Very underrated.

Uncharted was a sandbox. Well, it's most certainly not. Action/adventure on pretty strict rails. About a 10 hour undertaking that moves at a pretty brisk pace. It takes a little while to get used to the shooting (remember you can just shoot from the hip), so be prepared to be a bit frustrated at first. Otherwise the presentation is top notch and it's just a lot of fun. Ignore the plot holes. Shadow Complex is something I'd try given your criteria. It's a great Super Metroid clone (side scrolling action with a semi-3D aspect to it) with in a modern setting. Guy that voiced Nathan Drake (from Uncharted) voices the main guy here as well. So playing both of them close together might feel a bit odd. It's a XBL game, so it's pretty cheap too and clocks in at about 8 hours I think.

Well, the developer certainly intended for it to be replayed over and over, but I don't know if I could handle playing it too much myself.

Many people would say that is a bonus as the story was largely panned. Although it would probably be somewhat odd to not have any context at all as to what you're doing throughout the game, I don't think it would be that bad.

One of the reasons I've been holding off Crysis is that I'll be buying a new PC in the next couple of months, with Win7 and DX10 and tons more RAM and all that Jazz, so I was also planning to save it for that. After I christen the new box with Max Payne/2 and possibly Far Cry. Also, I thought you were possibly being sarcastic. Darksiders I see you said you would wait on it. But when you get money, this one is a great little game. Very underrated.
Oh, it's definately on the list. The thing is, about 18 months ago I used to buy everything locally within a couple of weeks of it coming out, for the best local prices. I still have many of those full-price games sitting around, unopened. I then did much the same around the middle of last year with Play-Asia and the far-cheaper US and Asian prices. I still have many of those sitting around, unopened. At this point I'm just going to hold out till today's new releases (Darksiders, IL-2, Splinter Cell, Bayonetta, AVP, etc etc) are cheap as chips, then scoop them up out of the bargain bins. Since it takes me forever to get around to them, I'm just saving money in the end. Uncharted Well, it's most certainly not. Action/adventure on pretty strict rails. About a 10 hour undertaking that moves at a pretty brisk pace. Otherwise the presentation is top notch and it's just a lot of fun. Ignore the plot holes. Shadow Complex is something I'd try given your criteria. I played the demo of Shadow Complex. It seemed okay for what it was. The 2-D threw me a bit since it looks so 3-D. I'd have to buy it though, so this relegates it to "later". I think Uncharted shall be my first choice, though. Followed by Lost Planet. Sounds like you want something a bit different than the, "same old stuff". How about Little King's Story?

If I play it twice, once solo with cutscenes and once co-op without, will I want to slit my wrists on the second, co-op playthrough, or will things be okay?

If I play it twice, once solo with cutscenes and once co-op without, will I want to slit my wrists on the second, co-op playthrough, or will things be okay? Well, it's a loot based game and you'll frequently find yourself replaying areas a lot to level up and get more gear before taking on the next area, so feel free to play each area single player first, and then co-op on subsequent runs through that area.

Unless you already own it, which you very well might given what you said. Don't pay more than a few $ for it. I got it for $10 on steam, and it still wasn't a great buy.

Did you play it with a 360 controller ? It's a console game, with a very controller-centric design. Like most Capcom games you have to accept the restrictions the game forces upon you : you have to learn the boss patterns, how to position yourself with the limited movements you've got, accept the fact that you're going to spend quite some time stunned. Think Megaman can't crouch, only quite a bit easier and in 3D. To each their own, I guess, and yeah, it can be found dirt cheap. I should try LP 2's demo.

Probably will run through it following Uncharted 2. And possibly RDR, which I should get back to at some stage. Picked up Darksiders recently as well, so I can give that a go at some stage. No FPS or RTS. How about hack/slash?
Bayonetta if out there if you haven't played it yet. Also, I was tempted to buy DMC4 for PS3 because it's like $18 now on Amazon. Although I have heard that DMC4 has a mandatory 5GB install or something.
I have played Darksiders. The main complaint with it is that there are very few areas with enemies still in them by the end, so it gets boring when you are trying to grind to max your gear.
Prince of Persia was also a good short game, if you like pretties. It's platforming for casuals, but not sandbox-y.

It's pretty much a city builder/RPG hybrid. I figured that if the intro movie doesn't turn you off, you'll probably be able to enjoy the game. It's a decent game if you can find it on the cheap; I'd never pay full price for it.

I have Bayonetta and DMC4 in the big pile. No install needed on the 360. Also got Darksiders recently. I've played through Uncharted 1 and just started 2, and then there's Lost Planet. So I'm pretty good on stuff to play next for awhile, so we can retire this thread for awhile.
well, except for the Little Kings' Story discussion. Feel free to carry on there.
