I would expect they will observe a moment of silence at the All-Star game tonight for The Boss, The Fat Man, and so many other nicknames he earned over the years from his fans and detractors.
RIP George, you re-energized a franchise that's a helluva lot of fun to hate.

As an almost life-long New Yorker. I agree with the assessment that he was an asshole.
But he was our asshole and he will be missed.

RIP George. Asshole or not, he has contributed more to baseball than most realize and will be missed.

A few rumors and myths I've heard about George Steinbrenner related to his alma mater:
- George attempted to donate the money for a new sports complex and athletic fields, with the provision that the new building be named after him. The college refused, as a third of the attendees are from New England and college admissions thought that being identified with George Steinbrenner would have a deleterious affect on admissions.
- When George's son left to attend his father's alma mater, George was so disgusted with the dorms he paid out of his pocket to have his son's room remodeled.
- When George attended Williams, the college still had a mandatory Sunday Service requirement with assigned alphabetical seating. This meant that, for four years, Stephen Soundheim and George Steinbrenner got to sit next to each other every Sunday. (The more famous story is that Sondheim and Steinbrenner sang in the glee club together, and Steinbrenner said "I had the better voice")

I have heard quite a few anecdotes about his philanthropic work. However, that doesn't excuse the permanent damage he did to baseball. He won't be missed in that regard.

One of the radio hacks here in town had the balls to say that he respected Big Stein for not taking the money out of the franchise, but actively pouring it back in to make the team better. I couldn't get through the call-in lines to basically scream at him that buying championships doesn't mean the same thing are reinvesting in your product. The man consistently overpaid high talent because he knew there was no cap, and thus didn't even bother to have a decent farm system.
He did more damage to baseball's parity than expansion.
