Argh, why must you tempt me into buying that gimmicky piece of shit Konami? I don't know, that really doesn't look much different than the GBA Castlevania games. I would've expected something more along the lines of Castlevania 3D for the N64.

Lament of Innocence was merely "okay", and it's the best attempt yet at a 3d Castlevania.

2d Castlevania works. Like Metroid, its just not the same 3d. Sadly the DS is doing that Metroid Prime stuff instead of 2d glory with the 2nd screen as a mapper which is right and proper. I can't concentrate on 2 screens at once anyhow. Least I know I have something else to look forward on my DS besides Advance Wars DS now. But if there is a god, he will put Metroid 2 and Super Metroid on the DS with my map screen request.
Please?

Actually, I played the demo of the DS Metroid game. It actually works very well, because I hate aiming with anything besides a KB/Mouse, and you can actually set the game up to be aimed with the stylus. It seemed like a cool idea to me, except the damn stylus is so small.....but it could still be fun played online...and the idea of an online handheld seems cool to me.

For me the Castlevania series peaked with Castlevania II on the NES and hasn't interested me since SOTN. I can't say this video does much to change that, especially with the tacked on DS touch screen crap.

Wow. Now, I love Castlevania. But breaking the ice with my stylus to make stairs is the silliest fucking thing I've ever seen. Goddamnit.

I have to agree with Velorath. Simon's Quest was the best of the 3 original Castlevanias on NES. Super Castlevania 4 on the SNES was also quite good, and Symphony of the Night on PS1 was the peak of the series, IMO.
Lament of Innocence was a good game, just not in line with my expectations for a Castlevania. Detailed graphics, great music, but the gameplay was more like Devil May Cry than Castlevania....enough so that they should have named LOI's lead character Dante Belmont. Don't get me wrong, I still like it...I bought it for $29.99, and I believe it's now a $19.99 title.
Some 2D franchises benefitted from going 3D, like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Mario, and Zelda....and there are plenty of great games that never would have been possible in 2D. However, there are some that were hurt by the rush to try and make EVERY game 3D.....Castlevania, Mega Man, Metroid, Street Fighter, UO, and virtually every top-down or side-scrolling space shooter (i.e. R-Type, Raiden, Gradius).
At times I just want to shake some people and say "Look, not every game HAS to go 3D! Just give me new maps for 2D Metroid and Castlevania SotN, and I'm good to go. If you can put in more great music, new sprites, and new items or abilities, even better."
Bring the noise. Cheers.............

Why no love for Castlevania 3? That was the best NES Castlevania by far.
Castlevania 2 was cool, but way too short and easy for the type of game it was.

Castlevania 2 was cool, but way too short and easy for the type of game it was. The part that I'd change about Simon's Quest that would have made it much stronger would have been to have had actual mini-bosses in the mansions. A non-linear game with secrets to discover, an inventory system, some RPG-qualities, and boss monsters destroy? That's the basic formula that brought us SotN. Castlevania 1 & 3 were okay, but they didn't feel quite as much like an adventure game as just a simple arcade platformer. When I think of vampite hunting, I'm thinking adventure all the way. Cinematics would have helped immensely, precisely as they did for Ninja Gaiden. Oddly though, I really enjoyed the SNES Castlevania 4. Go figure. Bring the noise. Cheers............

I usually played with Alucard or Sypha as my other character, so I missed that.

Simon's Quest owned the shit out of any other NES pseudo-RPG. Yes, by that I mostly mean Zelda. SQ had fucking atmosphere. Zelda had you fighting little orange bulldog men and cute little octopi that spat rocks in order to rescue a goddamn princess.

Lament of Innocence was merely "okay", and it's the best attempt yet at a 3d Castlevania. Agreed. There are other games of similar nature (because Japanese have no new ideas these days) which are much better.
