I'm considering buying a camcorder.  I don't need anything fancy or professional.  Anyone have any recommendations for something inexpensive but not a piece of junk?

Do you have an HDTV?

Define inexpensive.

Under 200 though the cheaper the better.  I just need average sound and picture quality so it doesn't look retarded if I post it on the net.

Can't you accomplish the same thing with a digital camera and a decent size memory card?

At a budget of $200 your choices are going to be very limited. Sony and Canon don't even make camcorders that cheap unless there's some sort of rebate/special sale involved. B&H Photo Video has a handful of camcorders at or below that price point though I'm not sure how good they are. If I was forced to pick one just from perusing the list and not doing any extra research I'd go with this one for $180 after rebate:

It's a DVD recorder which I like better than tape for casual usage even though DV/MiniDV is better quality. With the DVDs you get random access, easier on-camera basic editing, and you can just pop them into your DVD player to watch on your TV (may need to finalize the disc first).

Do you need to use it during the day for infrared filming?

I've got the Flip pre-HD edition, and it's awesome.

Hit button to start record, hit button to stop record.

Slide out USB hookamigjigger and pop into laptop. Press button to encode video. Done.

Comes with cable so you can plug into TV to view from device too.

I wanted to make YouTube movies. So I bought Canon's cheapest miniDV (digital tape) camcorder, which films in 16:9 widescreen (not HD), has good battery life, is very compact, and has survived a bicycle crash with me. It is feature-packed, gave me access to the world of digital video editing without spending too much to find out whether I liked it, and I just plug it in via firewire to get the content onto my PC.

Technology is moving too fast to spend a lot of money on a camcorder. Unless you need amazing high-end features, I think it's better to aim low but stick with a decent brand.

I mentioned my desire to buy a cheap camcorder to my gf and she went out and bought me one from bestbuy for 100 bucks.  Used it this weekend at the comic con.

Now I have to edit out some stuff etc.
