A new game download service called AWOMO is giving out free Rome: Total War  if you register in their beta. If someone has somehow not played this awesome game, now's a good chance remedy that. I didn't try the service myself as I already own the game, but if someone does it, let us know how the system works.

Thanks. I've yet to try any of the TW games.

AWOMO is designed to deliver the largest PC games up to 20 times faster than other download services. Our unique technology lets you start playing before the game has finished downloading, meaning you can be up and running, jumping and fragging in minutes rather than hours.

...

AWOMO instead delivers a smaller download compiled specifically around the gamer’s PC and broadband connection with all the data needed to start playing the game. The rest of the data is delivered in the background without interruption as the gamer plays.

If this is more than marketing hype, then that's great. I have never been very interested with downloading games considering it's usually quicker to just drive the couple miles and pick the game up at the store.

Also, this would almost be great --

“Rent to Own” allows users to play a game at an hourly rate, which is simply the “Buy and Download” price divided by five hours. The user can drop out at any time and pay only for the time they have played. Once the game has been played for five hours, the user owns it for life at no extra charge.

If it weren't for the fact that a typical $50 game will cost 10$ to try for just an hour, seems kind of silly when you could download the demo and play it for an hour. If they lower the price this could be a really interesting idea though.

I signed up and downloaded Rome. I can see what it's doing with the downloading in the background, as sometimes the game will just freeze - which is I assume when it's downloading something it didn't expect me to get to yet. It also seems to download some of the art assets as lower-res versions (and the fonts too). I'm hoping it downloads the hi-res stuff while I'm playing.

Either way, getting to play Rome:TW for free is the good.
