So I had a free one-month trial gold pass and it expired. Now I can't do *anything* on Live, including downloading demos. I want to sign up for Gold but I don't know how to do it.
If I log in with my existing account and go to "Configure XBox Live Settings" (or something like that) it tells me that I have to connect to Live to do that. When I connect to live it logs me out and I can't log back in with that account. If I go to "Create a Live Account" and enter my old user name it does the recover gamertag stuff then dumps me back at the Live screen still not logged in where I still can't change my account settings.
I must be missing something. How the hell do I change I just sign up for Live? I figure giving MS money should be pretty easy but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it.

Technically you should be downgraded to Silver which allows you to sign onto live at the least. From there you need to go to account management, but first you obviously have to resolve the issue of you just not being able to sign in.
Not modded. When I first boot up it says that I'm logged into Live but from there I can't access account settings and once I get logged out I can't log back in.

Not an answer to the troubles your having but my silver account let's me download demos,trailers etc no problems you shouldn't need a gold account for those.Every now and then one will pop up that gives gold members an advanced shot at the demo but usually only a week before I can grab it.
I know this might not even be your problem, but if you have a press/review copy of a game in the tray, sometimes they auto-force live to disconnect when the game is loaded.
