I have two systems at home and would very much like to be able to set up a temporary game server on one of them. I've tried this before with TF2, but I was unable to do so, mainly because it appears as though you need to have an additional copy of the game in order to set up a dedicated server. Is this true? Very disappointing if so.. :(

Not necessarily, generally you just need the install files and can generate a key for the dedicated server. Depends though. Were you thinking of doing it for L4D? Because it seems folks are getting the dedicated shit elsewhere.

Eventually I'd like to have a dedicated server for whatever I want to run.. How do I generate a key for it? I have the server files downloaded and installed on my second system.

It looks like you could create a steam account on your second box and they're all under tools tied to that steam account. I imagine the keys are automagically generated. I have access to dedicated servers for which I don't even own the games. What problem are you running into trying to set it up?
