I started up mining last night and ran into a bug I saw somebody else mention someplace else.  Some of the spawn points for copper mines would leave you in a crouching positino (as if you were going to pick up some ore) when you make a successful mining attempt.

I tried to contact the GMs about it, but after 2 1/2 hours of playing, nobody answered my ticket. *sigh*  I'll probably check their boards tonight, but wondered if anyone has figured a work around for this?

Here is what I know:

- Only happens on certain spawn points.  I returned to the same ones when they spawned and they would do it to me everytime.  Other spots worked fine.

- It would only happen when I successfully got something because I failed a few times on the bugged spots and didn't have the same problem.

- After being bugged I could do everything normally except loot corpses as far as I could tell.

- Once bugged I could not try again on the same ore spot because "that is being used already" would show up.  It is as if I am just stuck in the mode of pulling ore from the spot (thus the issue with looting any other "container.")

- I was able to move to another spawn point and mine there with no problem and when I made a successful mine, I was unbugged.

- Of course, logging out and back in fixes my character, but the spot continues to be bugged no matter what.  I basically remembered which spots to not even try later.

There is nothing that clues you into a bugged vs. non-bugged mining spot so it is trial by error at this point.  This isn't a game killing bug, but annoying to say the least.

Anyone?

Oh also, mine spots don't always show above ground and you can't target them.  It is as if the z-position on the spawn is screwed up.  I'm not sure if this is a related issue or not, but it makes sense.  It is as if the spot is high enough to initiate the mining sequence, but it is too far underground to retrieve the items.

Also last night a few times I mined a spot out and it never disappeared so there were spots that would show up on your map but you could not click on the ore to start mining it.  I got the crouching until logging out bug on several spots too last night.  Hadn't see these happen before so maybe its just lag related.

Yes, I saw that issue too (spots that couldn't be targetted.)

It might have been lag related except it happens on the same spot everytime.  It would be more intermittent if it was lag I think.  Plus, the spot gets bugged into thinking it is being looted.  The spot is server side so lag wouldn't affect it would it?  I'm obviously not an expert.

Could be related to that bizarre 'this creature is here but cannot be attacked' bug.  It's really there, because it'll do a dodge every once in a while, but all of your other attacks miss or hit for no damage, and it never attacks back.

Ass.

I had the mining bug as well. It seems to be fixed now. It sure sucked while it was going on, but I reminded myself it's a beta and moved on.

A good idea is a good idea forever.

I've had this happen with Herbalism as well.  Looks like a gathering skill bug moreso than just a mining bug.

lag issues. Server has not registered that the spot has already been mined. Same with about everything else. too many people and too little servers at the moment.

One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continuously stating and repeating the very very obvious, as in It's a nice day, or You're very tall, or Oh dear you seem to have fallen down a thirty-foot well, are you all right?

The best part of SWG was the easy account cancellation process.

The story I've heard, and which makes the most sense, is that several game servers use the same database server for storage of characer data, namely items; and that accepting items from loot, or quests, or harvesting, or merchants, or mail, or giving them up for quests or merchants or mail, all have to check with that server.  Due to the overcrowding as 12.5k people(per server) all try to loot boar meat is choking the heck out of the item database.

As a note of MMOG history...  SWG did the same thing, as far as having a couple game servers per database server... and they had the same problem, with heavy load making interacting with objects a royal pain.  They're also the other big 'liscense' MMOG that the public has seen.  Hrm.  Wonder if they're also using Oracle...

I have to say this issue has cleared up almost totally.  I still get the phantom mine spots from time to time, but they don't stick me so that is fine.

Definitely they are having issues with the item database.  I could play just great right up until I either loot, craft, or do anything that requires an item to be moved into my inventory.  Then I'd lag for anywhere from 30 seconds to 4-5 minutes.  That was always at peak times until Sunday.  Then it seemed to clear up mostly.  It sure made crafting a long (even more) boring task.

As I said though, it does improve as the days go by.  It was workable yesterday and last night and there were a lot of people online at the time.  I assume they are doing big hardware upgrades during those long maintenance periods because I've noticed the difference.

They had a job posting for an Oracle Admin on their homepage awhile back. So... I'm thinking yes.

I didn't have any "getting stuck crouching while mining" problems over the weekend, but I did see the same bugged non-disappearing mine spots.

The tradeskills make me think of UO. Which is a good thing.

Yes, but without failures, which is even better.  Plus, your gain in skill is very consitent and predictable.  I much prefer this method.

Yes, it is hard to get all of the resources to make the harder items, but once you get all of it you KNOW you will succeed and you basically are guaranteed a skill gain.  I view this as a much more positively reinforced system (effort in collecting resources, 100% success, skill gain predictable) rather than negative (fail, lose resources, no skill gain, etc.)

I'm still enjoying it.
