Is this game any good compared to Natural Selection?

I think I've asked this before and haven't been able to find anyone who's played both for any length of time.

No I don't find it as good as natural selection, but natural selection was sweet.

I've only played savage 2 for about 2 hours so far.  So far my thinking is very meh.  I see what they were trying to do with the melee system but it really just seems to make it luck if you win or lose a melee fight.  I haven't really had fun playing it and I'm kind of regretting getting it.

Is that actually in real development or the "omg it would be cool if we incorporated and made a whole new game and a mod at the same time and we can do this and that and this and that" development

Supposedly it's really being developed, although my last visit to their site indicated that they were still in the Photoshop mockup stage.

I listen to their podcast on occasion. They recently moved into new offices and hired two more artists. They have are using Lua to script the game and have most of that stuff in place. Their current theory is if they can get all the infrastructure in place, then making the actual game will be much easier.

The game demo crashes after loading for several minutes (exception error ?),oh well, I am looking forward to testing Conan.

edit: Got it to run, what a horrible game, I played for one hour and managed to kill 2 players on my own. Simply not fun for a newbie without any help.

I really suggest that you spend more than just an hour or two before passing judgment. Please also note, the melee system requires skill, and time to learn.

Link to a thread of good game tips.

Link to the UI tutorial.

Link to Units, and Tech trees.

Link to armor progression. Know what your up ageist, visually.

User submitted FAQ.

Also, voice overs, they are not just annoying.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Also, it is highly recommended you do the in game tutorial.

Sorry, if the melee system required skill you would have TIME to react.  Right now each fight is literally 10-20 seconds long and attacks happen too fast to react accordingly.

Without time to react, having a rock, paper, scissors system (which the game even calls it in the tutorial) is more luck than skill.

I submit that if you have to post that many links to defend a game it's not really a very good game.

One of my problems seemed to be that I joined games where everybody was level 8-9, and I was level 1-4.

After I started a match by grinding levels on NPCs, I did much better.

But I also think that melee is too fast and too random.

I disagree. Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Its less than most people here on this board will look at when playing any game. This will include "Strategy guides".

As for the not taking skill comments. You will noticed more experienced players pause for a brief second when meeting another players, there are tells to every single attack. The hardest to see is that of the conjuror, because of all the particle leaf stuff. If your going in and just clicking away, yeah, your going to die. Its mostlikely you pressing random mouse keys randomly that makes you really easy prey.

To each his own, but the game is a competitive one, and it will take time to master. And i'm not defending shit, i'm educating the noobs.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I enjoyed the game for quite a while before i got bored.  tongue

As far as I understood the melee system, there are 4 possible moves.

Jump attack. (more damage)

Normal attack. (duh)

Block (blocks normal attack)

"Special" attack (breaks block)

Still I don't see lots of blocking on my side, but I am sure "I am doing it wrong"  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

More Free Savage 2 Content
Jun 18, 2008 at 8:45 PM - Gary McLean - 6 Comments
S2 Games has released the second free content update for Savage 2: A Tortured Soul, their FPS/RTS online action game. Check it out:

Independent game developer S2 Games continues its commitment to support fans and community with the release of the second, massive free content update for Savage 2: A Tortured Soul. Delivering on the promise to continually update and support Savage 2, this marks the second in a series of free, sizable content updates that other publishers might ordinarily charge for.

The completely free content update will bring many new features to Savage 2, including:

  # Enduring Items - Unlike regular items, which players lose upon dying, Enduring Items will stay with players throughout the match. Some items will have only a one-time use, while others may have an ongoing effect for a specific period of time

  # New Special Unit: "Maliken" - Maliken is a late-game super unit, designed to be the most powerful unit seen in Savage 2 to date. To play as this unit, players will first need to acquire a series of special Enduring Items which will enable them to transform into Maliken and potentially turn the tide of battle for their team

  # New Beast Unit: "The Hunter" - Frequent players of the Beast Horde will be saying goodbye to one of their old units, the Summoner, and saying hello to a new unit, the Hunter. This new unit will improve game balance and provide Beast players with a fun and unique new unit to play

  # Automated Tournament System - The Savage 2 website will now have full tournament functionality for clans. This will be an automated system where clans can sign up for a specified tournament and receive their schedule/dates of play. Servers will be reserved in-game and clans will receive notifications of when they need to play. S2 Game will, of course, be hosting tournaments in the future and providing sponsorships as well as great prizes

  # Unit Movement Enhancements - Adding to the already robust combat system, this latest update adds a bevy of new "dodge and evade" maneuvers greatly enhancing the current arsenal of character moves

  # New Community Created Maps: "Desolation," "Ancient Cities" and "Hidden Village" - All maps were created by community members who submitted their maps for forum contests. Desolation and Hidden Village were created by "Mercenary," while Ancient Cities was created by "Manias"

  # Character Taunts - This latest update provides a unique "taunt animation" for each character in the game so now players can destroy the opposing team in both body AND mind!!!

"This latest update is really a culmination of ideas from the S2 development team AND the Savage 2 community," said Marc DeForest, co-founder and lead designer of S2 Games. "We are constantly working to elicit feedback from the players in order to create new content that will really have a positive impact on gameplay."

Savage 2: A Tortured Soul is available for download now at www.s2games.com. More information on this title can also be found at www.savage2.s2games.com.

Seems to be some major changes have happened here and there after the steam deal. May be worth a look if you already bought the game.

No, not really...game still sucks.  So few people play its hard to find a decent game to play and when you do its either repair or be fodder.

Kind of a shame, I would love to see a FPS break the WW2 stranglehold.

BRING BACK TRIBES 2!  :(
