The World's Worst Game: Curry or Covid

on: May 08, 2008, 04:41:44 PM

To make a long story short, my current phone is completely broken, AND, there's no insurance on it. I had no idea that phones nowadays are so delicate, but that is beside the point.

Point is, I'm on Verizon, and I need a new phone. And while I am at it, I might as well get a better phone than I had selected a few months ago; it was a bit smaller than I would have liked, and I'm not too keen on delicate LCDs on the front of flip-phones.

So, what are my best options? Is buying a new phone from ebay a viable option? Every time I look at an "official" Verizon piece, all of the prices posted have the caveat of "with 2-year agreement."

EDIT: I should have been more specific about what I need. I have a pretty basic plan. I don't use a large amount of call minutes, and I easily deal with less than 250 texts/month ($5 = 250 incoming/outgoing). I'm really not looking for anything insane, like a pocket PC or something like that. Just a phone that makes calls and texts. I don't necessarily want something ancient, but I don't need bleeding-edge either.

Get a smartphone, once you've had one you'll never be able to own a phone that only makes calls again.

You can get used ones on ebay for a good price, new will cost you $200+ for the cheap piece of shit "free" phone.

Theres tricks with insurance, too.  I'm not sure how Verizon's works, but with sprint I was able to turn a phone I bought from a friend for $20 into a $600 smartphone thru their insurance program.

You can get a Verizon RAZR for free on contract or for ninety-nine off contract.

The LG VX8700 is nice too, the user interface is quite a bit nicer than the RAZR's.

$100 for a Razr? Really? I can walk into a Verizon Wireless store and buy one for $100?

Because all the prices I am seeing say....something else, unfortunately.

EDIT: Didn't matter...the chick I went to see at a CC kiosk said I might be able to finagle a free/cheap replacement since the phone/contract was still fairly new. Directed to the full VZW store up the street that had the local tech center. Tech was nice enough to just replace it this one time. Hopefully the case I bought will keep this from happening again.

I'm surprised...I was expecting to have to cough up $100+. Instead, only ~$16 for the case.
