Battlestar Galactica MMO Announced!
by Mike

With Starwars Galaxies not living up to everyones expectations and a Startrek MMO currently in the works, its not surprising that the next big space MMO would come from Battlestar Galactica. The announcement comes just a few days before the 4th season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off this Friday. I don't know about you guys, but I love Battlestar Galactica. Without a doubt it's the best Scifi show ever and probably one of the best shows in any genre of all time.

But enough of the show, Auran Games, creaters of Fury and the Battlestar Galactica flight sim game, will be working on this new MMO which will be published by Sierra Online. The game is currently in the very very early stages of development, but I was able find some info about it by speaking to Greg Lane, CEO of Auran Games.

The game will take place during the first Cylon War,which makes sense considering it would be pretty hard to do a MMO where there's only 50,000 people and your stuck on a few dozen ships. Humans will be the only playable race, so if you were hoping to be a Cylon your out of luck. Thats basically all the info I was able to get, but Ill be keeping in touch to provide updates.

I knew someone would beat me to it. I have been kicking around a design doc for a BSG "like" mmo for a few years now. I bet my design is nothing like theirs...

There was a studio named 13th Colony Studios that originally was going to do a BSG MMO, but dropped it when they found out the license for it cost 10 million dollars.  13th Colony Studios subsequently become Colony Studios, and are still working on something, the last I read.

But a BSG MMO that I can't be a human looking cylon and isn't PvPcentric is a lose lose in my book.

Figure this will die about as fast as it was announced.

no cylon= fail.

Also, MMO coming out four years after the series ended= fail.

All life begins with Nu and ends with Nu.  This is the truth!  This is my belief! At least for now...

I'll believe it in late beta.

But not from Auran.

And not with that graphic.

Richard Hatch (not the Survivor guy but the OLD BSG hunk actor) has been trying to create an MMO for over a year. It's a post-apocalyptic sci-fi game based on the PnP game that he put out with lackluster results.  It's called The War of Magellan.

Part of their business plan is to get their fans to model lots of the assets for them.

He also tried to remake the series himself. Even went into debt shooting a trailer for it.

He also is on the new series as a supporting actor, so he's a pretty good sport all things considered.

No.  Auran is a set of about 8 companies, two of which had employees, Auran developments (main dev firm) and Auran Sweden.  Both worked on Fury up until release, then Sweden was working on a now canceled project.  Auran Developments went under, and about 10 people got rehired to staff Fury and Trainz (which about 4-5 people have since left again).

Auran Sweden I believe is the group that is working on this with Sierra.

*edit* I find it fucking funny though that they wanted Auran to work on a BSG mmo, when the xbox live BSG was a massive failure, not ot mention Auran's other non-Trainz games.

*edit2* oh yeah and Greg Lane hasn't been CEO for over 2 years so I dunno how accurate this article is to begin wtih.

He also OWNS the actual www.battlestargalactica.com web address which may or may not be profitable. At this point he's kind of like Tyler Perry - if I see his name attached to a project, I think "good god. can you not be like Howard Stern for 5 seconds?"
