You can even have multiple pets. One of my favorite UO characters was Tarzan. I ran around naked with nothing but a knife, tamed everything I could, then used all my beasts to kill more beasts. I used the meat from the dead beasties to feed the live beasties. And that's all I did. UNGA BUNGA!

This is what I miss the most about UO.  You could do random shit like this and it would work.  You weren't punished for rolling a class the devs didn't like.  Sure, you may not have maximized out all the plusses and been able to wtfpwn everything in the game, but you could have fun doing it and run around making a living.  Dikus don't deliver that experience.

Every time I get nostalgic I just fire up my emulator and go to town on that for a few weeks until I get bored.  Beats paying $10 to find out why I hated EA\OSI all those years ago.

Great Lakes shard (and maybe others) has something called Chicken Fight Club, where tamers basically have cockfights with trained chickens.  Every once in a while you find some tamer out training his chicken, having it solo lizardmen or something.  I went to the fights a few times last year, was fun gambling on them.

I'm really surprised all of the people that want this on a commercial server don't just announce, "Great Lakes is the PvP server!"  Then, all of the hardcore could play there only on the Felucca side.  Wouldn't that about do it?  Or were you looking for more changes that Felucca doesn't even have?  I assumed Felucca today doesn't appeal due to lack of numbers.

You just hit the nail on the head. The "old school nostalgiacs" could in fact do this very easily but they don't want to fight each other. They want to shear sheep and there are no sheep on the Fellucca facets.

Yeah, thats why I played on a free shard called Metropolis where I basically macroed then PVPed the whole time. UO PVP is exceptional.

But please, generalize more.

That doesn't make sense, because an "old school" server wouldn't attract "sheep."  I'm pretty sure UO PvP'ers just want to be able to actually get into fights whenever they want.  The last go around I did, it was really difficult to find anybody in Felucca that wanted anything to do with PvP.  Yes, there were certain times and places that you could get into a brawl, but it certainly wasn't like the old days of guild vs. guild, etc. 

I've never been a ganker of the innocent, so I have to agree that a place that is known to harbor all the people that WANT to PvP would appeal to me.  Right now all of those people are either spread across too many commercial servers and the rest are on emulators.

The Metropolis stint we did was fun, but as soon as some of our core people stopped playing it fell apart.  There wasn't enough population to backfill slumping attendance.  I'm certainly not going to solo play UO.  UO's strength for me was always the other people that played it with me.

A)  Attempt to do a champion spawn, at which point one of the zerg guilds that farms them will come along and waste you.

B)  Go to the Felucca Yew moongate, which is pretty much the designated "pointless ganking for laughs" hotspot.

I never liked Chamion Spawn camping because I would spend a ton of time fighting and end up with some rinky dink reward while the big guild gankers got the big drops.  Even when I felt like I was tally'ing up a good kill count I'd get shafted with absolutely nothing.  As for pure PvP enjoyment, there is just too much other stuff going on.  I much rather build up cash in other ways and buy it from said gankers instead, which is what I did for awhile.

The Yew Moongate was always some good quick fun at ganking gangs, but didn't have much for lasting value.  The best fights were the faction wars and trying to build up your status within your faction, etc.  People really got into that for awhile.  I wish they would have pursued improvements to that system more than they did.  The Order/Chaos wars were nice, but didn't have much depth.  Either system could have been made a lot better or merged to make a fantastic PvP setting.

Even the guild wars themselves were nice and interesting for awhile.  Again, they got old and there were never any major improvements made after awhile.  It is like they just kept dabbling into different PvP schemes and never commteed to one and ran with it.  They tried 3 different systems and then completely abandoned the whole thing.  Each one had advantages and disadvantages, but with further development could have been really fun.

This measures how bored I am this evening that I even contemplated downloading a trial of UO.

By the time tomorrow comes I doubt I'll want to actually PLAY it again - I have some semi-decent characters on my main account - WUA, what do you actually DO in UO for amusement purposes?

I like parts of it, hate others.  Zooming in and out was nice, graphics were shiny, all in all it was pretty smooth.  I did not like the new shortcuts, bags, item graphics.  I am using the old school client right now.  Check out the UO Forum in Graveyard for more info.
