Real time stats (well mostly real time) are pretty awesome.

http://steamgames.com/v/index.php?area=stats

They now have a listing of everyone playing X game. I'd be surprised if publishers wanted this information known.

      Current Players     Peak Today           Game

     57,400    76,004        Counter-Strike: Source
     48,265    65,053        Counter-Strike
     13,330    22,392        Team Fortress 2
     8,660      11,263        Condition Zero
4,637      6,678         Day of Defeat: Source
     3,193      5,728         Garry's Mod
     1,887      2,695         Half-Life 2
     1,866      2,773         Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
     1,416      2,277         Day of Defeat
     1,001      1,334         TrackMania Nations Forever
     797         1,365         Portal
     738         1,065         Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Everything else at the link. Also, probably good to have a catchall thread for stat discussion on steam.

Whenever an opponent discards a card, Megrim deals 2 damage to that player.

In China alone it's over a million (April 2008 numbers from The9) so worldwide it's probably somewhere around 2 million.

I'd be surprised if publishers wanted this information known.

In professionally run industries it is not normal for companies to object to this sort of data being published.

But you are probably right.

I'm pretty impressed that Portal is still on that list, for having only a few hours of gameplay in it.

People are making some pretty creative puzzles with the SDK. There are some packs that have added countless hours of frustration to it.

Because you don't think you'd get enough fun out of it to justify the $10, or because on principle you think programmers only deserve to be paid for their labors if they work for big companies?

The first bit.  I didn't get it back when it was free, so why would I pay $10 for it now?  Also, my usage history of two different TESCS has shown me that I'll probably not use it to make anything.  Also also, I'm a big cut-out-the-middleman guy who would be much happier buying games directly from the developers, but they should make things I want.  This is why I paid for the Mount & Blade beta but have not given Toady One anything for Dwarf Fortress (waiting on a UI that I can deal with).

Grabbed this today:
     79,042    93,002         Counter-Strike: Source
     73,127    86,324         Counter-Strike
     12,930    17,133         Team Fortress 2
     11,065    13,605         Condition Zero
7,253    8,258         Day of Defeat: Source
     3,181    3,759         Zombie Panic! Source
     3,029    5,425         Garry's Mod
     2,677    2,805         Age of Chivalry
     2,490    2,638         Insurgency
     2,319    2,687         Day of Defeat
