Why didn't anyone tell me Valkyrie Profile was so good?

Seriously.  I bought it last year when I was still in my money wasting phase since OMG original worth lots of money so I got the PSP version.
I cleared 2 games out of my PSP queue, the ok but soulless Field Commander, and the "And this is why you hate EA even if they didn't skuilfuck Origin Systems and get NFL exclusivity" Lord of the Rings Tactics.  (Which is the most mediocre SRP I have ever played.  Its not good, its not bad.  Its just.. eh.)

Popped VP into the PSP, figuring I would take a little break from Front Mission on the DS (Which is more Front Mission, but compared to 3 and 4 it leaves a lot to be desired.), and HOLY SHIT THIS GAME IS FUCKING GOOD.

Its not your usual weeaboo angstfest with hours of dialogue and even more hours of pointless random combat.

Its..  DIFFERENT.

And now I just ordered the PS2 sequel while I can still get it cheap.

Keeps me away from WoW for a few more months if nothing else.

Valkyrie Profile 2 is hot as hell also. So you'll enjoy that. I enjoyed it more than the first actually.

Just to warn you now. Valkyrie Profile is FRICKEN DEEP. Like blows away just about every other Console RPG there is deep. Like see you in a month or two deep.
We're talking multiple difficulties, endings, bonus dungeons, and a combat system that rewards the committed and does not hold your hand.
It's also gorgeous, and as you said the dialog won't make you want to stab someone,

Im 20+ hours into VP, and 2 1/2 into Silmeria.

They hardly seem like the same game at all!
(Interesting that I am being ABUSED by beasties in Dipan in VP, only to start up the sequel and get to see the previous events only from a different angle.)

Man.. no wonder the PS2 is still selling nicely.  This game is GORGEOUS.  Makes me wonder why the Wii with roughly 5 times the power hasn't taken advantage of it yet...
Shit, it looks better than some 360 titles!

I hardly have any clue what is going on in combat though.  Things just die in 10 seconds and the fight is over.  Dash towards the obvious leader, kill it.
The first boss took 30 seconds.  Had to circle around it twice.

Much easier than VP which is getting less fun as I play it.  Some of the encounters in Dipan's Ruins are fucking EVIL.  My mid 20s party (thanks to grinding a certain area in a previous dungeon) can barely hack it.  These evil bastards block 70% of my attacks, and these even more evil bastards just suck the HPs out of my dudes and regen their own!

Valkyrie Profile is legendary for it's brutality towards the player. It is an unfair and cruel mistress. Still a great game!

Took me around 40 hours of game time, but I completed it against the Surt boss on Normal.
The Valk, Lucian (for his insane multihit combo with one of the final swords you can make), the ghost in the armor guy (his ice secondary breaks EVERY block allowing for combo fun), and the old mage guy.

Surt was the usual JRPG final boss.  Heal, heal, attack at full blast, repeat till dead.  Just thankfully without HIS ULTIMATE FORM.  (Ultima 1 did it first.  Almost every JRPG seems to copy that formula.)

It seems I need to go to Youtube for the REAL ENDING, but after 40 hours I am quite done with VP and playing it through again on hard with twice as many dungeons for another 60 hours is not my idea of a valuable usage of time,

A pretty solid game all around, but the more I played it, the more the rough edges started to grate on me, even as I learned how it did things.
