I played the original halflife and thats about it, anyhoo I just purchased the orange box and am wondering if there is an order to them (yeah i get that episode 2 comes after 1):
I am thinking it might be:
Half-Life 2 Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Half-Life 2: Episode 1 Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Is that correct?

The lost coast was just used as a technology demonstration for the source engine, it was supposed to be a level in Half life 2 but got cut. It doesn't really belong in any chronology, it's just a free extra level.
My problem was that Half life 1 was so long ago I didn't recognize any of the characters in HL2...

Sad thing about Lost Coast, it's level design at it's best. It's absolutely fantastic.
I wish all the levels were that good :(

Pretty sure I never finished HL 1, I think I remember shelving it for UO but even that memory is a bit fuzzy.

so considering I am downloading HL 2 atm should i just download lost coast prior to playing at all (ie does it plug seemlessly in to HL2)?

I guess you could pause your playing of HL2 at some point during the long coast run, play Lost Coast, then go back to HL2.
I'd suggest one of the outposts being a good spot.

Hmmm. Azazel makes a good point. After the highway, anywhere there would be safe to pause and play Lost Coast. In fact, I bet that's where it was, some warp point along that coastline.

It's not related to the main plot at all. It's just a neat level with a lot of Z-axis fighting and pretty design.
Half Life 2 at the beginning of the game is art. There's a long section past the middle of the game that's insanely dull, but after that it picks right back up again.

Playing through it again, I'm at a point where it's dragging. Without giving anything away, the part after the communal shower area when you go outside and then go back inside. Again. For evers.
The place witht he showers in it started off great with great atmoshpere, but has gotten to the point of tediousness. Doesn't compare to Ravenholme, but then, what does?

My problem was that Half life 1 was so long ago I didn't recognize any of the characters in HL2... Well, thats cause technically, the only people who were really carried over were the Gordon, the G-Man (indestructible dude in a Business Suit with Briefcase) and Barney (the security guard who was the main character in the Blue Shift expantion for HL1) All the other "characters" were generic scientists (every scientist in HL1 used one of like, 3 character models), who were later extrapolated into single individual character personalities in HL2.

Well where the hell did those friendly aliens come from? First time I saw one I tried to blow its head off but the damn game wouldn't let me.

I never actually made it too far in HL1. Last time I played it, my computer died after awhile and I never bothered to restart it.
Is ti actually worth playing through, given modern FPS expectations, etc?

Sure, assuming you don't mind it looking like ass and not having delusions of being a character piece. Also, feel free to just stop playing once the alien-world bits start irritating you. It's all downhill from there. Personally, I preferred Opposing Force.

What he said. When I played HL1, I thought it was one of the best games ever made, and still do. Playing it now might not be as good due to the dated graphics, but HL1 and Opposing Forces were amazing for their day, especially considering what FPS's were like before it came out.
