Looks nice, but too bad the software running on it will be a joke…

Verizon doesn't get it. At all. The iPhone isn't great just because it has a touch screen and a web browser, the same way the iPod isn't great just because it has a hard drive and a headphone jack.

Anyone can make a pocket touchscreen device or a phone that can play music. We've had them for years.

Apple products are great because of their software, not particular hardware features. Verizon has never put any effort into software because they don't think it's important.

Eh? See, I don't think Apple gets it. The iPhone is about as utilitarian as a ming vase. Which is to say, it's NOT AT ALL.

That guy hasn't even seen the product yet. He's just wildly speculating.

The phone is exclusive to Verizon, at least for now, so it's likely they had a large say in its features and functionality.

Actually given their stock price I would say they do get it.

No no, they know how to appeal to real life loot whores. But I wasn't talking about that, and you already know that, heh.

Its looking increasingly likely that Apple will have a 3G iPhone available by Xmas.

I don't think anyone gets it really. As far as smartphones and PDA's go, I mean.

I just noticed that "SHORTCUT MENU" bar at the top. Nice use of screen real estate there.

Disagree totally, and I can't believe this is anything other than a troll…

* 160+ DPI, on a screen that blows away the competition, at least for the present time

* full keyboard access (some of us old timers arn't so adept at using a numeric phone pad for texting…)

* google map integration unprecedented -- look up an address, one click gets you to web page/phone call

* best web browser on cell phone device (not counting Nokia tablet, but that not a fair comparison since Nokia tablet is not a cell phone), scales images so well and touch screen interface is unmatched…

* serves as a combo PDA, phone and iPod (and a better iPod than dedicated iPods)

Granted, iPhone is imperfect, and is missing a bit (and the sad tragedy is that if Apple got off their high horse it would be mobile phone nirvana) but stacked up against RAZR, blackberry, LG, etc.… …no contest, at least in terms of UI, display aesthetics, etc.…

How many steps does it take to start dialing a number on the number pad starting from an asleep/locked iPhone and assuming you remembered to leave the number pad as the last thing showing in the Phone app?

Double press home button (though that depends on your setting - some people choose to have iPod pop up for that touch action.)…
Make your call, or maybe you tap "Favorites" or "Recents".  I never use the touchpad, I just tap on those two or easily scroll through the contacts (which flipping through is easier than any "machine" based contact list (or paper/rolodex type deal) you've ever used).

But I think I need to draw a distinction here. There's a difference between pressing a "hard" button and a touch action. Many of you won't understand because you haven't the experience… …the touch screen interface becomes so intuitive and ingrained, you don't think about button pressing sequence, it's such a natural action that there is a mental step reduction…  …and that's not even accounting for the visual voice mail and other features…

I'm using far too many words to describe here, as there is no real thought process involved, you have to experience it… …the only parallel I can draw is like anything else seems like programming a VCR where you have to remember all the special sequences a button invocations vs. something that just is automatic that you don't even think about it…

A significant factor in the EDGE iPhone launch was that AT&T's 3G offering did not support HSUPA, which they are apparently now trying to push out rapidly in the fourth quarter. You have to imagine that they plan to introduce a device that will utilize HSUPA, since none of the devices they currently offer are capable.

My iphone is great after I jailbroke it and put the installer on there. It does everything and more that I need from a phone. It's not god's gift to man, and without jailbreak it would simply be pretty and a bit above mediocre but usable. However...

Having used Verizon for the past 7 years until last month, I can say with authority that anything new they release is going to be a pile of dogshit.

They see their customers as nothing more than walking wallets. In many cases, their entire business plan hinges on crippling firmware to disable commonly used features of phones, and then forcing the customer to use verizon's custom (shitty) service to use those features, only now with a nominal fee. Witness their touted 'get-it-now' and 'Vcast' for examples of this.

Verizon isn't concerned about GUI and usability; Apple is obsessed with it.
Verizon isn't concerned in giving power to the consumer; Apple only wants to give 'approved' power.

I hit the top button to wake it up, slide to unlock to prove I'm not my pocket, and it returns to the last thing showing (the numpad in that case.) Of course, no one ever leaves the numpad on, it's more likely on your contacts, recent calls, or your ipod; In that case, you have to hit the home button to go back to the menu, and then the phone icon, and then the numpad (or contacts, or recent calls)

Problem with iPhone is that device could be amazing instead of better than the average sucktacular smartphone… …hopefully that potential will be realized, if not by Apple, then by Google phone, or $OtherNewPhone, but I doubt if Verizon is suddenly going to turn a new leaf… …Nokia might be able to put it together though…
