Finally got the game.  Anyone have some must have mods to recommend?

Also, they tried to get me to pre-order for the expansion which is coming out on November 21st.  I've heard nothing about this, and couldn't find an official site on the web.  Hmm...

You positively NEED the BTMod, which de-consoles the UI to a large degree.

If you plan on murdering people (and you should) you will want No Psychic Guards.

Otherwise just poke around:

The Reccomended mods section has a lot of nice stuff. For me the 'must have' was the saddle bags. Although all of the texture and graphics enhancing stuff is nice as well.

*Seconds the BTMod*

If you are going to play an archer, get the ultimate archer mod. Lighter arrows and slight boost in arrow damage - IMO not to the point of imbalance.

First time I won Oblivion was with a stealth Archer.  Yeah, those heavy arrows were a bitch, but I could repeatedly critically attack a mob in stealth and they wouldn't try to defend themselves.  Tiny damage doesn't seem so tiny when it's multiplied 4x over the base.  Too bad there's no mod to fix this hole in the AI.

That happens occasionally to me but its more the exception than a frequent occurrence. I find that I can actually kill things with a bow with this mod where I was not able to before. They would get to me, and pound my sorry ass while I scratched them with my hiawatha model indian set.

An astutely accurate observation, I admit.   :-D

I did have a way of working around that, where I could use my Acrobatics and Athletics skill to run and jump to keep out of their melee range while avoiding their long range attacks.  However, it still took several dozen non-critting arrows to take down the foe.  Given their weight and difficulty in finding again afterwards, I often ran out of arrows before finishing off the foe.

So yeah, a mod that lights up the arrows and makes them do a little more damage is a good idea, even if getting down the knack for consistant stealth critical hits would transform you into a nuclear silo of absolute destruction with only a few more points of arrow damage.  I know a trick to do it every time quite easily.

For bow-stealth characters in morrowind, I would just use a paralyzing dagger when they got close and plink from close range.  Actually, I didn't really need to bother with stealth for that approach... we'll see how well that works in Morrowind.

Made it through the starter dungeon so far on a throw-away character.  LOVE the game.   Too bad they made my favorite race, the Argonians, look like twits.

Also, my mouse gets really screwy when in the character creation screen and in the dialog screen.  Anybody know what's going on there?

The way to win as a stealth archer is to also be an alchemist.  It's just like that big red EASY button you see in the OfficeMax commercials.  Even if you dont down them in one hit, which you can even with steel arrows, you can just run off and hit them again when the first poison wears off.  Atronachs are somewhat harder but not impossible.

Paralyze weapons were the easy button in MW. They were so ridiculous I had to stop using them.

Read through the release thread - anyone have a leveling mod to recommend?  Dz, Balor, something else?

Think I'm going to try to make a pure mage.

Have not tried the leveling mods, but I have been playing TES games since Daggerfall.  I don't have a big issue with the default behavior.  There is, after all, a difficulty slider.

More questions that all of you probably figured out six months ago:

So I'm in the Construction set, tweaking the races like I always do in TES games.  I can do everything I want except add new racial powers/abilties.  I've created the ability in the magic-->spell-->ability section (minor magicka enchancement for a duplicate argonian race), but I can't seem to add it to the race.  Or add any new powers to any races.  When I click anything in the specials area in each race, it only gives me the option to delete.

I could just create a new birthsign to give me what I want, but I'd rather use them for other things.  Anyone know what's going on?

Edit:  I'm an idiot.  Click and drag ftw.

Level mods = not having to max/min your char.

Increases attributes automatically when skills increase, and levels automatically without resting.

No more ghost punching/fatigue potion making/light spell casting nonsense to get all x5 multipliers.  Just play the game and it all works out by itself.

I use Balor's, lots of options and goodness.

I can also recommend Oscuro's oblivion overhaul.  Does a LOT of stuff, the biggest of which is not having to contend with everything in the game being exactly the same level as you.  No more bandits caked in glass and living in tents eating rats.

Believe it or not, the official mod forum is a good place to go for info.

Why don't you try our other games?

Bandits in improved armor never bothered me. I always figured the market was just getting saturated with armor and weapons due to a certain adventurer plundering every available hole in existence, such that every beggar on the street could afford a glass dagger.

True.  Granted, the reason for the glut might have something to do with that certain adventurer running across bandits outfitted in glass and daedric armor.

There were mods that prevented bandits from upgrading.  It's not even that hard to do one's self, just find out which treasure table the bandits are getting their gear frm and modify them not to include those items.  Similarly, modifying the spawn tables to spawn any mobs regardless of player level isn't that hard to do. However, it's not very challenging when 95% of the mobs can be dispatched in one hit.

I wish they'd just release Daggerfall with Oblivion's engine :)

That would be great, except that something might freeze over if Beth released a TES game that actually had more complexity than a previous one.  They have obviously shifted to the "shiny" path instead of the "game" path.  I'd pay double the going rate of PC games for it, though.

Have to lose the mouse-navigation scheme, though.

Yeah, necropost.

Anyway, I finally decided to try and play this fucking thing today, except of course, it's apparently pretty fucked up without a ton of mods.

I downloaded BTmod, but I can;t figure out what the fuck it's supposed to do besides let you fuck with the UI if you want to spend weeks on that sort of shit. The docs also suck badly, with no actual fucking installation instructions.

I've heard of OOO, but the webpage linked talks about how fucking bad-ass it makes the game, and frankly I'm a newb to this thing, so I'm not interested in the "brave and tough new world of OOO".

I just want something that unfucks the auto-levelling, so I can play the game for a couple of weeks before getting bored and uninstalling.

You couldn't have waited 12 days?  Necro's that aren't even a year old are weak sauce.  It's almost like it's still a relevant discussion or sommat.

Before adding in any of the texture mods be sure to poke around on google about them. There are some that can really fuck up your Oblivion with crashes and adding in graphical bugs. This happened to me with a lot of the popular texture mods.

There's a new version of FCOM out.  It combines the four biggest overhauls of Oblivion together and makes them compatible with one another.  It is love.

This thread necro killed my Sunday.   cry

I spent a good chunk of the day reinstalling, checking out various mods and wandering around with the graphics maxxed.
