Can someone explain to me why Rome: Total War is good? I just played the demo, and uhm errrrr....No? I guess if you're a war buff then it may seem awesome, otherwise I don't see the appeal.

Turn-based strategic goodness, mixed with 3d real-time battles. Some hate it, I love the whole series myself.

It played WAAAYYYY too fast. I think I beat that second battle in 10 minutes.
I see the potential. I've yet to play a Total War game retail, but I might actually pick this one up. It's hard for me to resist turn-based strat games (which it is between battles apparently).

You can get Medieval: TW for like 10$ nowdays. If you are into strategy at all, you should definitely play it.

MTW has some issues....for some reason it hates my video card driver, though it used to work :(
It's well worth playing. I got the demo after 5 hours pnm bittorrent. Looks like I can play the game, yippu skippy!
How the hell you're supposed to fight elephants I don't know.
Anyone know what the difference will be with the 3 different houses of rome?

You will probably need to fight elephants with skirmishers of some type, either javelin men or archers. I haven't tried the demo yet, but historically, that was the most effective way to beat the fat bastards. Heavy infantry would just slog with it and get crushed, cavalry was all afraid of the heffalumps.
I have the same dilemna in my miniature wargaming right now. The friend I normally play to tune up for tourneys has been taking Alexandrian (and Successor) armies against my Later Medieval Hungarian armies, which are primarily knight and heavy foot based. Knights get manhandled by elephants.

I have found that the best way to beat elephants so far has been to use skirmishers, and flaming arrows if you have them. Of course, in the full game you will have the flaming pig option to scare the elephants into trampling their own infantry. As far as the demo itself, I though that the battle at Trebia was fun on the hardest difficulty, where the Roman infantry is actually worth something, but I find most of the recent mods for it to be a lot more entertaining. Here's a list if anyone's interested. http://www.totalwarcenter.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6982&st=0

Anyone know what the difference will be with the 3 different houses of rome? They are the Julii, the Brutii and the Scipii. The Julii get to fight the barbarians up north (Gauls, etc..), the Brutii get to fight the Greeks & Parthians(?) (i think) and the Scipii get Afrika and the Carthaginians. After having a sucessful campaign in your designated theater of war, you are supposed to cross the Rubicon and engage in a bit of healthy civil war before bringing the Senate around to your point of view. The idea is that none of the other factions are playable until you unlock them by defeating them (or some such). And yes, flaming pigs. I suppose i now really respect the guy that posts as "Pig Destroyer".
