So I picked up GH and a Wireless Gee-tar for the PS2 last night for a try (go go EB 7-day return policy), had a mess around with it with the wife, and it apparently has an overwhelming thumbs-up.

So.. she's going to pick up GH2 on her way home from work tonight, and I want to buy a second wireless Guitar while we're in town for dinner Friday night.
Then it occured to me.

If the guitars are the same, with the same recievers, will they have cross-interference?
Or will they be ok with their own special unique snowflake reciever IDs so I can have two of them going at the same time without them getting confused?

I could just buy the second axe and try it out for myself, then return it. But I'd rather see if I can find the answer before going through the fucking around..

ta.

There's no cross interference. Honestly though, once you hit high level play, you're gonna want a wired one. There IS a slight bit of lag on the wireless ones.

Is that what happened to Slash last night when he played "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"? Poor Eddy was spinning in his rehab bunk.

Hey thanks for that, but damn.. Is the cable a pain in the arse when playing at all? They've never bothered me with typical videogame controllers, but wireless definately seemed to be the way to go for this particular game.

You don't want lag in rhythm games, especially not in one as perceivably precise as this one.

Depends on how much of an air guitar freak you are. I play sitting down in a chair and the cable is no problem at all. If you play standing up and thrash around or, say, like to play with the guitar behind your head, then the cable may be a problem.

Stupid board ate my post, so short version:

Thanks for the infos and advices. We got GH2 with the wired guitar - the cable seems a bit short (another 1m/3ft would have been perfect), so I dug out a PS2 extension cable and all is good. We both suck still and will probably never get past sucking, but as long as it's fun it's all good. Will use either/or for most songs, both at once for multi, and if we get up to the high level zones will use the wired one exclusively.

Sorted.

I've seen Phil perform these feats with the wired controller.  Then again, these are people that thrash expert while I struggled through medium.

We're good now. One wired, one wireless.

However.

How the fuck do we "unlock" the Encore songs in GH2? We're just playing on Easy atm, and we've opened up Tier 6 (Crazy on You, etc). Tier 1 is the only fully-opened one, but all the sings on it are 4 or 5 star, yet there's no option for some Spinal Tap goodness.

What's the problem? Is it Easy mode? Do we need 5 stars on every song in the appropriate tier? I can't find anything that tells me what we need to actually do..

Might be that it's easy mode. We started on Hard, and as we beat the first 5 songs of each tier, the sixth unlocked. I'm not sure if there's a star requirement or not.

Yeah, it's because we had the gall to just play on Easy and enjoy ourselves  rolleyes

Unlocked Spinal Tap, but unfortunately you can't go back and play it in Easy even then.
Not a good move, doing the whole restricting content thing IMO. This isn't a fucking MMO so who cares if I suck? It's not a competition, We just want to have fun.

Prediction: 2 abandoned guitars shoved under my Warhammer table within a month due to frustration causing quitting. I've already lost interest pretty much, let's see if she (who seems to play for an hour or more a night) can hold out.

feh. I'm bitter.

With some practice you should manage medium. The only complaint I have about this game is the lack of really great songs. The positive thing about Frets on Fire is that you can get every song ever made pretty much, and if it doesn't exist you can create it yourself.

Seems pretty cool. Unfortunately, the community is in it's infancy. Give it a year, and I'm sure websites will spring up complete with song ratings and tons and tons of creative-commons licensed songs.

Yikes.  I'm pretty retarded at rhythm games, but medium really isn't that bad. I'm still horrible at the game but I managed to beat medium in a handful of sittings. Just give it some time, you'll get better.  The first time I played the Spinal Tap song I barely beat it, the third or fourth time I was barely missing a note.   I just can't play too long or it cramps up my arm really bad.

You wanna play Freebird, right?  There's only a handful of songs on medium that I can't play worth a darn, but they're not songs I really enjoy anyhow.  I don't imagine I'll ever be able to play on hard unless I put some serious time in.

Azazel, getting frustrated with Guitar Hero isn't an option.

Learn it, love it, get to expert or else you're missing MOST of the game. The first 3 tiers are NOTHING but training.

Missing what besides Freebird?

I just can't see myself having enough time to burn on GH to get that good. I'll agree with Sairon about the lack of really great songs thing too, though as music's a matter-of-taste thing, YM will always V. I do find myself thinking that this-or-that song would be great for GH though..

The harder the difficulty the more the buttons you press/strum correspond to the actual notes in the song. I.e. it feels more like you are playing the song.

minor update.

Just finally had a look at the Hard and Expert levels of GH2 (on Monkey Wrench, a Tier 3 song) and I can safely say that there's absolutely no chance of me ever getting to that stage. At best I can muck about with Medium and scrape my way through the songs. (though Monkey Wrench just kicked my arse, which was what prompted me to check out the harder levels of it).

Maybe it's because I suck at music, or because I've never played guitar, but while I don't mind some of medium, anything harder is just not ever going to be fun to me. I'll never have the patience/care enough to get that good and the wife won't ever have the skill/patience/care. If I was going to care that much, I'd you know, learn how to play a real guitar as opposed to fucking around on a console.

Just a shame that if you're a shitty/low-average player at the game it will take a grind that makes Vanguard seem like a walk in the park to unlock anything, and you'll never get to play Freebird.

Content Cockblocks in single-player, non-competitive console games suck bigtime. bleh.

If it's the shifting of fingers that's the problem you could try playing it together with one guitar.

I may try that over the holidays. Ta for the suggestion.

It'll still kill us, though.

They really need some cheat codes to unlock everything. Buying a game and not being able to see all the content is bullshit.

From the original GameStooge comments-

Quote
Like I said - you know what my unlock code is? The $90 I paid.

Exactly. It doesn't change the structure of the game to allow me to play all the songs if I want- I can still go through the pathing. But I should be able to play all the content at least in practice mode when they are nicking me for a C-note after taxes.
