I'm surprised at how many people still use a HD under 80 Gb.  Sheesh... you can't even fit half of Vanguard on that!   tongue

Onboard sound these days is much better than it was in the past.

As far as I can tell the only reason for buying a sound card nowadays would be if you wanted your computer to serve as a media centre with 5.1 or greater sound.

I had terrible issues in games with onboard sound.  They only cleared up when I installed a sound card.

I totally agree. Great into the home theater receiver, too. Never had a problem with games.

Yeah, I just can't hear the difference between a good soundcard and my onboard one.

At first, I used onboard sound, as did my wife. But as she started doing Internet radio broadcasting, the onboard sound started to suck it. We bought her a Diamond 7.1 sound card and her problems went away. I'd noticed some sound issues with EQ2 at the time, mostly with sounds trying to overlap in fights causing serious sound stuttering. I got the same Diamond card and the problems went away.

I didn't either when I was just using the standard speakers that came with my old machine.  (It's got onboard sound and came with a Live! card.)  Then I wound-up with a set of 4 speakers and a subwoofer and the difference was very marked, particularly after I tweaked all the settings for the setup.  Directional audo in games is fantastic, provided the game is actually programming for it.

If I get the 7.1 surround sound set I want for the new media machine, I'm going to be having a lot of fun, particularly with movies.

The thing is that my computer desk is right in my living room (if you saw the picture I posted, it's directly to the right of my component stand) so I can screw around on the computer and just look over to watch the TV.  I already have a 5.1 surround sound system for my TV, which I'll also use for PC gaming (if I'm playing on the big screen) and I also use as a sound system (my MP3 collection).  I just don't have room for a similar setup for my computer, so I bought a fairly decent 2 speaker/w subwoofer package for the computer.  Now granted, I'd like to have a 5.1 system for it, but it's just not practical.

I remember when I built my celery 350 buying a pair of 64 meg sticks and the guy at the store asking me why I wanted so much ram. Anyway back to topic the numbers which surprised  me are the number of people with small displays. It's not like monitors are all that expensive now and what is the use of having a kick ass video card if you have a 16 inch monitor. Or maybe it is just that at my age the eyes get weak.

Given the number of failures we've seen in MMORPGs, designers need to learn it's hard enough just to make a fun game without getting distracted by unnecessary drivel.

I just can't believe so many people run at 1024x768 resolution. How do you do anything when you can only see 4 icons on your desktop?

And over 1000 people are running Windows 98 still, *and* they use Steam? Come on!

I use the on-board sound on my fairly nice ASUS board. It works. The sound quality is average and there's no EAX2+ support, nevermind the fact that FRAPS can't capture any decent audio with it. It does the job though and I just can't be bothered to drop $80+ on an X-Fi when I'm convinced Creative is gonna drop a new Audigy chipset the instant I pick one up.
