Haemish is going to review it. I played it before, I endorse it given it's setup. It's a neat game made by the indiest of indy developers. I'll post more about it later and haemish should have a review done in a week or so. Edit: Just wanted to add that the little Independent game group on Waterthread was going to tackle Starport just as Joe and I started talking about f13. So yea, it's not a new game, but we did interview Aaron - the lead dev a while ago.

It seems that IGN just discovered this game and did an Interview with the developer, one Toonces the Driving Cat locally. So, has anybody played it yet?

I gave it a shot way back when F13 was running their ads...It wasn't my kind of thing though.

Haven't played it, but wasn't "Toonces" some activist group in the 60s or 70s? At least, Dar Williams said it was or something. Edit: Ok, and looking at the Gallery, I have no idea if this is a top-down or 3D game. Wut?!

Toonces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEZP-Ekg228&search=tooncesI think it's a top down game with 3D backgrounds for the planet bits. But I'm not sure. I'll try it out this weekend.

Thanks for that link. That was the last era I watched SNL and enjoyed those.

I played it for a few days. It's basically a graphical Trade Wars. In fact, it's almost exactly a graphical Trade Wars, where your money supply is from either buy/sell, or planets that you own. The space map is a top down view, where you slide around with inertia, and bounce off planets/stations/stars if you happen to run into them. It only takes a few seconds to jet across each solar system as they are not terribly large. You can also land on planets which have the same physics and a similar size, but are constrained in a sort of simple maze.
I thought it was OK, but you have no chance of survival without a guild to play with. The big downside is that while Fed space is safe, it is also very small. Everything outside it is unsafe, which is pretty much open PvP. The big, BIG catch is that your ship remains when you log - oh, and that you get taxed for staying in Fed space. While you can play without paying them (money translates to in-game items/cash), it's not practical. With only x turns per day, you will only barely make enough to cover your daily rent inside Fed space. If you leave it, you WILL die. You can stay logged out on a planet, but without a lot of people helping build it, someone else WILL invade it and kill you, even if it's a frozen lump that can't support microbes, let alone a colony.
I imagine it's somewhat fun if you're willing to spend a few bucks on it, and have a couple dozen people to game with. Otherwise, it's not that survivable.

I did a review for it way back when, that has been lost to the sands of server downages. I'll see if I still have my original document and try to post it to Game Angst archives sometime this week.
