Content of this post stolen directly from here - http://www.onrpg.com/ftopic60934.html - so all credit is to that guy and my ctrl v and c keys.

Prepare to be blown away. Feel free to ask questions like "Is that a samurai riding a shetland pony? Why are there tigers wearing soccer uniforms?" I won't have the answers, but maybe someone will.

If we decide to send someone to try to play all of these I've got dibs on ATC and Accion.

1000db looks like it is just Silk Road Online which already exists in english, and it is a very grindy but very free Asian MMO if anyone is looking for one.

I would translate some of those if there weren't 20 billion pictures.

Every single kid in korea plays a shitload of video and computer games.  Its not cool, its not nerdy, its just what you do in a country with so little open space.

I think it's cool that in the mix there is a tennis game, golf, basketball, snowboarding game, soccer or something, etc.

I also like kind of chibi-style graphics. But the games I have seen/tried of that nature have been awful.

Frankly the Korean art typically wtfpwn's EQII/DAOC/DDO in my opinion.

They almost always get the "feel" of the world down better then those games, often on par with FFXI and/or WoW.

But typically they have next to 0 character customization which makes it rather pointless, and the gameplay itself is always a giant fucking grindfest with awesome sounding new features that are never patched in no matter how long you wait for them.

Oh but they do have pvp in almost every game, I wish US players weren't such a bunch of pussies and Koreans weren't such grindaholics.

Korean games = you better have a good bot, otherwise dont even fucking bother.  That is a good rule of thumb for the handful I've played.

Actually, I like the art style of Mabinogi. I wish our MMOGs would start using different styles of art instead of this plasticy shit or the typical generic fantasy template.

That character looks she should be part of GuildWars. I wonder if it's by the same artist/designer. The Ragnarok 2 character design, on the other hand, looks like crap.

In theory so many games being out, and lower costs for production, should mean that all sorts of interesting
game mechanics can be experimented with. In practice I'm sure that's not the case, but perhaps they'll mature
faster given the volume of production.

I actually like the look of yogurting, the character on the left is doing the anime "cry" emote which is something
I haven't seen before. Can't begin to imagine what the gameplay is, it looks like a running track but lots of them
have huge white crucifixes chained to their back.... bizarre.

The great majority of those games, unsurprisingly, are Korean. There's a few Chinese you listed, but the Korean MMO market is pretty damned crazy.

For example, Yogurting. It's an MMO where you are a girl in school.  Really. It "features school life with cute and comic characters tackling ordinary school problems." Look, a music video!

mms://streaming.yogurting.com/movie/Yogurting_ALWAYS_MV_Low.wmv

(if that link didn't work, go here and click on the big MUSIC VIDEO link, which is the only thing in English:)

http://dl.yogurting.com/preopen/index.html

Always - Yogurting. It's like one of those wacky Japanese dating sims, only online so you can... well, I don't want to know what. But apparently at some point you fight zombies with radishes while wearing a nurse's outfit in the 6th grade. I'm not making up a single word of this.

This is probably not something you're going to see at Gamestop any time in the near future. And we are all weaker as a culture for it. You KNOW you want to level up your cute schoolgirl in Synchronized Dancing.

Seems like half of those use the same 2.5D isometric engine... just with slightly different art assets.  I'd imagine they can develop more interesting systems if not all their resources go into building teh shiney art.  However, given what little I know about MMOs... I doubt they do.

A lot of this is because Diablo was WILDLY popular and Korean MMO makers sought (consciously or otherwise) to emulate Diablo's interface. It's less apparent in more recent games.

It's also a lot easier if you aren't masters of 3D programming.

A lot of US art tend to be very non-stylized. That's not just in video-games either. It's also true in cartoons, fantasy art, etc. For example look at someone failry well-known like Vallejo. Not stylized in any way really.

Going back to FFXI I am starting to understand what makes something feel like a world. I will probably write something up at some point, but the basic idea is this - at any given time in any given area you have characters of a huge span of levels along with enemies of different rarities that also span a huge group of levels.

Like 5 of those games look *exactly* like Lineage II.  There's a couple there where the character and armor models are barely changed, if at all.

One thing I notice about most Korean games I've played is the control system is all weird and not very customizeable.  Lineage II being a great example of that.  Same applies to FFXI to some degree, but it's clearly designed for a controller and plays perfectly when using one.  I wonder if there's some peculiar piece of hardware that's very common in Korea that all these MMOG's are designed to use in the interface...

A 'roundhouse' is a type of kick in several martial arts.
