So i got this white xbox...

As a gift day before yesterday i got myself a Xbox 360. I was going to post this in the other thread, but it seems to be kind of degenerating and this has a slightly different focus.

At xmas i gave my xbox and about 15 games to the Empty Stocking Fund, a local group that redistributes games and toys to kids from underpriveleged families. I wasn't playing it much, spend most of my gaming time in WoW or EVE so it was no biggie for me. Anyway, a family member thought it was a big sacrifice and got me a 360 for my bday.

So, not really wanting or needing a console at the moment, i unpacked it and immediately got the shiny buzz. Ooooh. Pretty hardware. I have a 56" DLP HDTV so i hooked the sucker up, switched the HDAV cable to HD, connected an optical audio cable to my receiver and found a ventilated home for the power brick. Then i sat back and powered her up. I was greeted with a pretty 360 splash screen for a few seconds.

Then i got a big black screen with white text in 7 languages stating that my Xbox had suffered an error and i should check the Xbox support site. The error number was E67.

Ok, hm. So i check the site which basically says; restart the xbox and if that doesn't work phone us. So i restart the xbox. And that doesn't work. So i phone. 3 times. Each time i'm disconnected at some point between pressing 1 for English and pressing 3 for 360 support. Hrm.

Ok. This is what i hate about PC hardware. But at least then i can take it apart. So a few googles and some forum threads later i discover E67 is an error commonly associated with the Hard Drive. Ok, i remove the drive, reconnect everything and fire it up. It works! I can play a game! But i can't save a game, or create a profile or do anything that will last after i power down.

Ok. Hm. So i jump in my car and drive to the local Best Buy, only a few maddening blocks over the bridge. I buy a new 360 HD for $120 CDN and head home. I also pick up Tiger Woods 06, cause hey, i like console golf.

Arriving home, i disconnect everything, detach the original HD. and connect the new HD. I reconnect everything and fire it up. It works no problem and i am able to convert my prior Xbox Live ID to the new 360 system. I spend a few hours playing Project Gotham 3 (which is actually pretty damn good) and Tiger Woods (which is pretty but the same game as i had only with less courses). The i turn it off and go back to my Undead Warlock Alt.

Morale of this story? I'm pretty conversant with gaming tech. I just built a AMD 64 x2 based media server with 1.6 TB of drive space and optical sound for my home theater and recently built my new gaming box both from box parts. And i was kinda stumped when i got the E67 error. Some googling and some $ fixed it, but ma and pa jones aren't going to a) know how to do that or b) care enough to. It was not a great OotB experience.

That said, the games are pretty, at least in 720p on my TV, and the new wireless controller is  . But there's no games i want, PGR 3 aside. I have CoD2 on my PC and prefer shooters with a mouse anyway. I don't want feature stripped sports games, and i have the only decent racing game available. There's no exclusive RPG or Action game i can find that is interesting. And honestly, my game machine is also hooked up to this TV so the pretty wears off quickly, after all WoW is also pretty in HD.

Meh. I feel really sorry for anyone who bought one of these at 150% cost on ebay. Just not worth it right now.

EDIT: Oh but i did throw the defective HD back in the Best Buy packaging and return it for a store credit that got me a new headset and a copy of BF2. So no lost $ really.

One of my thingies about the 360 that there really aren't any games I want to play for it out yet.  I reckon by the time there is, and I mean more than one or two, 360's will be common as muck and I'll be able to pick one up at the local grocery store.  As for all those problems... we've gone through that sort of thing before and Righ is able, like you, to tough it out and fix it all up.  However, I'd hate to be the parent of small children who find that on Christmas day they can't play with their BIGGIE present.  Doesn't matter matter how good you are at fixing things if Best Buy is closed.  Children scare me anyway.  Angry children would terrify me.

I totally agree about the games. Thats the main reason I havent gone crazy trying to get one. I can go to EBgames or any other place, look at the Xbox games and out them in two mental catagories, "Better on PC" or "Meh". Now I know some people say, yeah but every thing falls in to those two catagories. Not for me. I like games like SSX3, Tony Hawk, Prince of Persia, KotOR, Zelda or Ultimate Spider-Man or my Consoles, and so far Xbox 360 only seems to have verious sports game, or which I am not a big fan, or FPS which I would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather play on my PC.

So, get me some good games, and Ill get a 360.

Unless they radically changed the gameplay (doubtful), all it is gonna be is more of the same, only prettier.
Its a game series for chronic masturbators, and totally inferior to Soul Calibur and Virtual Fighter.

The gameplay is light years tighter than the last two revisions. But since no one cares about my opinion of fighting games, let's just say Famitsu didn't give it a 39/40 because it was an xbox 360 game (har).

It had this weapon "affinity" system that usually resulted in you doing 1 damage to bosses unless you made multiple weapons and grinded each up for a specific enemy type. That was about the worst thing about the game.

Other than that, it had damn good gameplay, a great plot, great music, and probably the best graphics of any PSX game made (which isn't actually saying all that much).

Those games are all pretty much gamer heaven though. You can safely pick up any of those titles and be guaranteed fun. If you don't have fun, sell your consoles and die.. You obviously lack the skill to have fun and you will no doubt punish the world for it.

I loved Vagrant Story.  I know that it wasn't for everyone though, and I certainly wouldn't call it perfect.  Soul Calibur 2 was superior to the first, but it also came out 4 years later.  In that respect it was disappointing to me that it was only a slight improvement on the first.  Nintendogs I honestly can't stand, but maybe that's just my fault for neither being an 8 years old nor a girl.

SC is better than SC2. I don't feel like explaining why, but the SC community is pretty unanimous in that thought. The simple explanation is that SC2 has a lot of stupid crap that didn't exist in SC1.

When I put the frame count for reversals on DOA4 in the "Best of 2005" thing, it was for you and only you - I'm pretty sure not a single other person here gives a shit (though I could be wrong and wouldn't be surprised) For people that don't take this genre that seriously, SCII was superior in evey way to the original and DOA4 is a huge release.
