SPIELBERG EYES MARY POPPINS REMAKE

Oscar-winning film-maker STEVEN SPIELBERG is planning to remake classic 1960s musical MARY POPPINS.

SIR RICHARD EYRE, the director of the London stage show of Mary Poppins, has been approached by Spielberg to helm a new version of the 1964 JULIE ANDREWS-starring movie.

Eyre says, "Spielberg wants to make a new film of Mary Poppins and we've talked about it a lot.

"It will be hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success."

Why the fuck do people feel it's neccessary to retread on old movies?

NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE REMADE! Some movies are good as they are right now.

No one under the age of 40 has any idea what a chimney sweep is, so is the leading male character going to be a DSL repairman?

I personally think NOTHING should be remade. It's bad if it's already a classic because you'll never beat it. It's worse if it was crappy originally because it sucked for a reason.

I liked Carpenter's "The Thing", but really they were two different movies with a somewhat similar story line.

People still have fireplaces and they still have them cleaned.  Those blokes who clean them are called chimney sweeps... even in America. In fact, the last place we lived in had a fireplace and had to be checked yearly by a Certified Chimney Sweep.  They're even officially called that.

So there.

Apparently no one in his part of the world has a functional chimney.

For some reason, I hear "Mary Poppins remake" and I see Jar Jar Binks in my head.

I don't know why. But it can't be good.

Maybe they'll kick it up a notch or two. Like, Angelina Jolie playing Mary Poppins comes smashing through the window on a BMX bike and takes the kids paragliding or something and suddenly there's a villain they have to beat for some particular reason and everyone learns a lesson in the end when she ends up riding the chimney sweep off into the sunset.

MARY POPPINS: THIS TIME, IT'S PERSONAL.

You're not a truely great film maker until you get a chance to piss on the classics.

My kids enjoy Mary Poppins and I don't find it terrible myself. It looks really good on the recently restored version DVD.

I still don't think this is egregious as the remake of The Manchurian Candidate.  While admittedly not a bad movie, it didn't even come close to the greatness of the original.  So why did they remake it?  Because it was old and black & white, and some jackasses (admittedly and sadly, my father is one of them) won't watch black and white movies anymore.

I'm just waiting for some douchebag to remake Citizen Kane, Casablanca, or Dr. Strangelove for the same reason.

Out of those three movies I only think Casablanca is good enough to be pissed over a remake.

You could remake Casablanca. It wouldn't be god, but you could remake it. It's not hard.

It would be IMPOSSIBLE to remake Dr. Strangelove without being assassinated.

You could remake Dr. Strangelove.  That is if you made the story about a lost puppy trying to find it's way home across America's heartland.

Any remake of the original story would just be a waste of time though.  Also, it's one of those movies that was made in black and white on purpose.  Artisitc vision and all that.

I just think it's balls to mess around with Kubrick. He would rise out of his grave and inflict unknown horror against those who would do such a thing.

Casablanca with Hillary Duff and Ryan Seacrest?

I'm waiting for the remake of Full Metal Jacket with roboJoker and the CGI Pyle, set in the near future middle east.

Remaking Dr. Strangelove would be retarded in the extreme, unless you did it as a period piece. And even then, it wouldn't resonate because many of the actors you'd put in it just wouldn't get it, because they hadn't been there. Not to mention the younger audiences today just wouldn't understand the quaint fear of Cold War nuclear destruction.

Also, RoboKubrick would kill the filmmaker, pluck out his eyes and skullfuck him.

Citizen Kane and Casablanca are also movies that cannot be updated, because they are so ingrained in the times and situations they arose from. Can you imagine Citizen Murdoch?
