News Corp. to Buy IGN Entertainment

Quote
NEW YORK - News Corp., the media conglomerate headed by Rupert Murdoch, said Thursday it will buy Internet company IGN Entertainment Inc. for about $650 million in cash.

San Francisco-based IGN and its network of sites, most devoted to video games, will become part of News Corp.'s Fox Interactive Media unit.

This deal marks News Corp.'s third Internet-related acquisition in recent months. The company is in the process of closing its purchases of Intermix, operator of the MySpace.com social-networking site, and college-sports company Scout Media.

With the addition of IGN, Intermix and Scout Media to existing Fox-branded sites, News Corp. said its U.S. Web traffic will increase to nearly 70 million unique monthly users and more than 12 billion page impressions per month.

IGN's major properties include IGN.com, GameSpy, GameSpy Arena, FilePlanet, TeamXbox, 3D Gamers, Direct2Drive, GameStats.com and a number of Web sites within the Vault and Planet networks. IGN also owns and operates two entertainment Web properties focused on movie-related content — IGN FilmForce and Rotten Tomatoes — and a male lifestyle site, AskMen.com. It also provides technology for online game play in video games.

The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2005, subject to regulatory approvals. IGN's chief executive officer, Mark Jung, will continue in his role following the acquisition.

I wonder how much of the online media Murdoch intends to buy?  All of it, no doubt.

There's something poetic about the Vault Network and Fox News being under the same banner.

Ya know, I always wondered how they could make IGN worse. I was beginning to think it wasn't possible.

I should just stick to predicting the faults of online games.

My brain just went SPROING!

That's the sound of something so completely overvalued as to be Dot.bomb like. I don't care how many McIGN ads they run, that fucking festering hole of dungswallowers isn't worth $6.50.

I wonder if Fox originally found O'Reilly and Hannity on the Vault? That would explain A LOT.

Expect the addition of a new morality rating system, ranging from Blue (safe for children and busybody soccer moms) to Red (if you buy this game, the terrorists win).

And Shadow Hearts - or any other game that "glamorizes the homosexual lifestyle" - will never be reviewed again.

I guess we can look forward to all Fox movies be rated highly Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Also, I don't see why they would keep TeamXbox and 3D Gamers going with IGN already covering all that. Might as well streamline.

Cool, then he still has 350 mill left to by f13 - can I have a t-shirt when it happens?

He already spent $580 on MySpace so he's over his limit.

If anyone notices any difference between IGN now and next year, I'll be very surprised. How it's worth that much, I have no idea, except to assume it's based on the place being seen as an electronic version of all the print ad space companies seem to like hyping the value of.

No way, they'd never do that.

That'd be portraying blue as the good color and red as the bad one.  The liberal media does enough brainwashing already, Fox doesn't need to help them out!
