EMS Worker Charged When Co-Worker Dies From Defibrillator Zap

POSTED: 10:23 am MDT August 11, 2005
UPDATED: 10:44 am MDT August 11, 2005

LEBANON, Va. -- A former emergency medical worker is accused of fatally zapping a co-worker with a cardiac defibrillator.

The two worked for Highlands Ambulance Service in Lebanon, Va.

Prosecutors said 24-year-old Joshua Phillip Martin put the device to Courtney Rhoton's side and discharged it. She died three days later. A preliminary autopsy report listed the cause of death as electric shock.

The device uses an electric shock to restart the heart.

Police said they're investigating whether the death resulted from horseplay, an accident or something else. Police Chief Mark Mitchell, a former paramedic, calls the case "bizarre."

Russell County Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Bush declined to discuss Rhoton's death, but said the nature of involuntary manslaughter is "the accidental killing of another through negligence."

A Russell County grand jury has indicted Martin on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the June incident. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

I thought a defibrillator's job was to stop the heart.

BF2 argument.

Medic 1: Dude, BF2 is so full of shit.  You can kill people with defib pannels for chirssake.
Medic 2: Hey, it could happen. Those things put out some serious voltage.
Medic 1: Bullshit.  They just put out enough to jolt the heart, it's amps that kill anyway.
Medic 2: $20 and a stack of midget porn says you're wrong.
Medic 1: You're on. Easiest 20 I ever made.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

Neither is correct.
Medicine like athrophine and nitroglycerin is used to start the heart. Heart massage is used to keep the blood oxygenated, so that the body might function again.
The defibrillator (or two hard punches if you're giving heart massage and don't have a $2.000 device handy) is used to get the heart beating properly if it's beating too fast and too little (which is often happening in cardiac arrest), which means that the heart isn't stopped, but the weak heartbeats doesn't develop into proper sinus curves and doesn't push the blood around - the scientific terms are ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.
It is not effective for a heart that has stopped completely (asystole) and it's not the magic device shown on television or movies (like E.R.) - but they're effective and look good on the screen.

It can stop a heart, though (or put it into fibrillation). Which is why the doctor shouts "clear!" and why paramedics shouldn't shock each other for shit and giggles...

I would like to discuss this more with you, but I'm not allowed to post in Politics anymore.

Pussies.  Back in my day we just stuck a fork into the electrical outlet.  Now you've got your fancypants paddles and terms like "sinus curves".
