You people need to lay off the shit.  Seriously.  The braintrust has been dispersed, spawning three reasons I don't care about this news: GuildWars, Hellgate, and... uh... well I guess Castaway isn't doing anything, but you get my point.  Mike O'Brien is working programming magic at ArenaNet and the Schaefers are working design magic at Flagship.  I'll be bold and state DIII is going to be another WCIII, at best.  So will SCII.  You can't go home again, fuckers.  Just ask Kerrigan.

Time will tell, I feel the same way about the 2006 Patriots (fuck you New England, and your stupid Red/White/Silver team) but I haven't had many agree that the Pats minus their coordinators wont still be super bowl contenders.

As to the idea that Blizzard's games were never that good to begin with, I agree about SC.  Fuck that game tell me more about the spiritual sequel to TA please.  WarCraft was cool but I liked CnC allot more (orcs and elves and dwarves! zzz) before they ruined that franchise while trying to milk it like some kind of sadist farmer on pcp and my thoughts on Diablo echo Llava's completely.

Whether or not you like SC, SC certainly succeeded in being a game that was comercially successful, successful among harcore RTS players, and a worthy competitive game. Usually you can't get all of those. Often games that are comercially successful are pretty lousy at high levels of competition. War3 is a good example - pretty successful commercially but it was never the competitive game that SC was and the overall hardcore RTS community was kind of meh on it.

As far as talent and brain drain go, I hink people vastly *underestimate* the effects of talent drain. It's possible to have processes and culture in place to make products achieve a certain level - consistent art design, nothing terribly wrong, good production value, etc. You can keep those sorts of things as individual talent moves around. But truly exceptional efforts require exceptional people.

Diablo 2 was waiting for it's large patch for years, and that was underwhelming.

Blizzard seems strange to me. They make very few games and don't seem to grow as a company. You would think they would expand and put out a larger range of products or something.

See... those who don't get D2 don't get it because they aren't playing the game for the shineys.  That's it.

Diablo 2's loot table system with randomly generated stats is TEH BESTEST.  If I could choose one thing to change about World of Warcraft, it would be a vasty more complex random loot generation system.  It takes me so little attention to parse through the attributes on a WoW item; please, can I have a few more options, a few more interesting item attributes, maybe the chance to find a randomly generated item with end game value?

Am I the only motherfucker who just never got all that interested in either Diablo or Starcraft? I could give two shits if they ever made a sequel to either of those games again. I'd rather the bitches just fix the fucking Moonrunner server and smash the harvesting bug bullshit in WoW.

Agreed.

I played Diablo a bit with some friends in HS.

I kinda liked SC...but played maybe twice online. I can't stand the rush bs that occurs in Blizzard games. I'm an old AoE player, and I like to actually build up my stuff, not amass some cheap units and throw them at people.

They've been working on Starcraft II since at least last October. Don't ask how I know that.

Whatever happened to Starcraft: Ghost?  My favorite missions in Starcraft were the ones where you infiltrated a base and had to work your way through it, carefully expending your limited units.

It's an action-packed interactive experience now.  If you liked Halo, you'll love Starcraft: Ghost!

Hated those missions, seem to rely on trial and error.

I, too, have wondered why there is no SC:G yet.  The game practically writes itself. Stealth in, avoid detectors, steal technology, lock-down key enemy assets, nuke the hell out of stuff.  My favorite way to play Starcraft was to just use ghosts and nukes to level everything.  Good times.

Sorry, but it's true.  D2 had a better loot system, faster and more entertaining combat, and had the benefit of being built for fun, as opposed to being built as a time-sink to maintain subscriptions.  I never had to stand around spamming LFG in D2, nor did I ever have to spend twenty minutes running down an empty road.

I liked the Diablos- I even finished the first one, which may be the only video game I have ever completed in my life (other than a couple of the gold box games). I really didn't like Starcraft- just ain't my bag.

I will buy D3 and play it, although the 800x600 thing really bugs me. What year is it again?

Didn't they decide to drop Nihilistic as a developer and turn to another one? That might explain why there is no SC:G yet.

Personaly I wasn't so crazy about D2, I lliked the first better. Better atmosphere in the first and a much larger achivement for its time, D2 wasn't all that much better than the first imo, still a game which was worth playing through.

I like Warcraft 3, I'm a real sucker for RPG elements no matter what genre we're talking about. What's primarly good about WC3 though is all the custom maps, and escpecialy a map called DoTA. The phenomen that is DoTA is huge, it's what CS is for HL.

To try and explain it to those who hasn't heard of it, it's 5on5 RPG with a truckload of diffrent classes. 2 bases which spawns computer controlled units trying to make it into the other teams base through fighting their ways through 3 diffrent lanes. Everybody controls 1 hero each which are good at diffrent things and at diffrent stages of the game, it's all suprisingly balanced. When you kill stuff you gain money and if you kill one of the oponents hero you gain a little bonus + that the enemy hero must wait a couple of seconds for respawn in their base. Money buys items, there's even a little crafting mechanism in which you build items togheter to more powerful shiny. If you haven't tried it and can afford / have wc3 + tft you should definetly give it a shot.

Yup, another fun one (was when I was playing) was Tides of Blood.

They're just custom maps, but they're hella fun, they're where WoW gets it's Battlegrounds ideas from.  But they're better because after a 1 1/2h match, you can just make a new account and pick a new character.

Who cares about D3 in 2037 when Hellgate London might be released like this decade?  Not to mention the fact that we'll get a fps view (I think?) which means more skill in locating shiney, and you'll be socketing shotguns with chain lightning n stuff.  Oh and even the illusion of player skill will make me play it longer.  Although I'd love to hear more about their pvp thoughts but I wouldn't love that enough to visit their website and read a dev blog or even worse a pre-beta forum so one of you handle that.
