From an imaginary FAQ:

Q: Will players be able to play the established characters?
A: No, are u nuts? We can't have potty-talking nerds desecrate our intellectual property with their utterances. You will play no-name heroes with no resemblance to our characters and you will like it! Like you did in SW:G!

Q: So why should people play that instead of City of Heroes?
A: Because CoH isn't on the XBox 360, fool! Give us ur money for our new shiny this fall! We will have three CPUs to bounce the tits in DOA4 with! U can not resist teh titties!

A little bird had told me Sigil was doing preliminary work on this, so this seems to more or less confirm that rumor.

No excuse for this not to be twitch. None. Zero. The 360 requires a broadband connection - the current stock of MMORPGs on a computer still needs narrowband support.

They've got that going for it at least. The Marvel Universe is much cooler than Cryptic's could ever be.

Even if the game sucks (which it most certainly will), it's good to see so many MMO style games coming out for next-gen consoles.

Unfortunately, they'll probably ignore the design advantages of console games and just copy PC MMO design: grindfest, lfg, spawn camping, farming, time sinks, griefing, etc.

Consoles are the perfect place for action-packed, low time investment, voice-chat only, levelless MMOs.

I'm guessing it will be like Xmen Legends only online.  How can you make everyone's character persistent if it is just Wolverine#2590?  You'll log in, select the character you want to play during that instance, join with others to do a mission, finish with some new shiney of some kind, rinse, repeat.

It'd be nice if they made an opposing side (Brotherhood) that does the same and during PvP missions, you interact in some way. (A la CoV except without all of the other MMOG nastiness like lvl'ing, grinding, etc.)

If they do that, then it'll most definitely suck.

I like to have a character of my own to identify with....At the very least.

The only way I would fucking play it is if it had fully destructable terrain.  If that is not in, then Cryptic can keep getting my money.

Oh, wait, it is only for the X-Box 360, guess I will not be playing this even if it gave shiney blowjobs.

Btw, just to remind you, SOE has the rights to a DC game (part of the deal when they took over MxO).

Which would make the RP of a MMORPG, but they only state it is a MMOG.  Plus, they tell you that you can play your favorite Marvel character.  Those things together make me think they are going for more of the multiplayer arcade type game, especially since it is on a console only.

However, I agree with you.  I'd rather have a character I can call my own.  It will be interesting to see what direction they go.

If they design some really nice fast paced twitch combat for PvP in the Marvel universe, I'd forgive not having a persistent character to develop.  It would be more of a FPS at that point, but might be fun.  Oh, all that aside, I'm in the same camp of "Xbox 360 only? ----> Not playing it."

I don't want it to be twitch.  It's too late for me to get all coordinated.  I have freaky reflexes and they only work sometimes.

No twitch.  Ever.

I look forward to mass multi games on consoles. Here's to doing button combos and shit like that instead of standing around with 39 other dorks, pushing 1 though =, and f1-f5.

Hope at least one of the upcoming console mmos is twitch so I can stop blowing money on computer upgrades. Like schild said, broadband assumed.

 Nintendo Controller

ps: SOE having the rights to anything is sad. I've yet to play a fun game from them.

None if you don't want to have a chance of playing with anyone outside of your own country/region

Nope.

I keep seeing that thread getting bumped in the Comics section. I guess I should take a look then?

And NO is the answer.  They cancelled the only game that had a chance, "MYTHICA" and now are supporting games that I think will end up like AC2 began - a ton of $ dumped into the project providing shallow shiny, that lacks any fun/passion.

Plus True Fantasy Online. If they didn't believe in console MMOs then, why now? Don't be tricked by WoW's success.

But license glimmer can make people stop thinking rationally. 1) Look at struggling Matrix Online. 2) Marvel as a comic-book brand is as dying as the rest of the superhero genre there, with only the movies considered successes. 3) People will not buy your console to play a MMO, you cannot compare with the PC MMO market.

Four words.

Built. In. Voice. Chat.

That's what this is going to finally make everyone else elumate in MMOGs.

Assuming they, you know, launch it this time.

Also, the thread title is subtly wrong, MS seem to believe they launching not just a MMOG, but MMOGs pural. Which begs an important question, what is the collective noun for a group of MMOGs?

My vote goes to 'a spawn'.

Nobody calls anything a MMORPG anymore, that's *so* 2003.

If you label something MMORPG, potential customers might think it's SWG or something. All the cool kids use 'MMOG', or the even cooler and slightly mysterious yet cow like 'MMO'.

Also, they don't tell you that you can play your favourite Marvel character, what they say is...

Quote from: PR Bunny
"With this next generation of gaming, Marvel fans will finally have the ability to create choices with their favorite Super Heroes, villains and creatures in unbelievable detail — all with the power of Marvel's incredible vision and the Xbox® platform."

Which doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Pointless tangent: I prefer MMG over MMO. If you use it plural (MMGs), it translates as Massively Multiplayer Games. Pluralize MMOs and you get Massively Multiplayer Onlines... which makes no sense.

No opinion on a Marvel game, other than to say that if it's X-Box only, I won't play it. The last console I owned was the original NES. I'm not fond of the superhero genre in general, so Marvel and DC games hold zero intrinsic appeal for me. The only reason I play CoH is because I had a chance to demo it at GDC '04, and it was straight-up fun. If the Marvel/DC games are fun, I'll play them too.
