Caught this over at Kotaku.

Wow, that was quick.

It’s been less than two months since Ken Kutaragi was telling the world how the Playstation 3 would be much more than a game console, serving up delicious media and also acting as a home network router.

Well, scratch the home network router. Kutaragi told Nikkei Electronics that the whole router function has been dropped because it would be too expensive.

I can’t wait to see what else fall by the wayside as next year’s ship date approaches. I hope they keep that whole being able to play games function, because, although it’s pricey, I quite enjoy it.

How long until they drop blu-ray?

It's just like the PSX. The P stands for Pipe Dream. And the SX stands for nothing.

Now replace SX with S3.

I'm excited about the PS3, sure, because it's a new console and I love me some new consoles. But SCEA sucks ass at marketing. They don't understand the demographics or their own products. The PSP marketing was totally fucked and the PS3 is being made to look like a joke by Kutaragi. Sigh.

Also, for both systems, Gamez please.

Microsoft got Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tetsuya Mizoguchi, etc. What's Sony got now? The leftovers at Squeenix? Capcom? Please.

It's definately time to RE-EXAMINE YOUR POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE.

Not really sure what was envisioned with PS3 being a router anyway.  Like I'm going to plug it into my cable modem, then to my PC?  It would seem to be better serviced as a hub by having bunches of USB ports and A/V connections.  If they're interested in multimedia, include firewire to upload video, and sell a DVD with video tools.  Give me a PS3 webspace, connectable through the console, to upload this stuff.

But three gigabit ports?  Crap, I don't have gigabit cards in my PCs, and even cable can't come close to that.  What's the point?

Hironobu Sakaguchi IS the leftovers from SquareEnix. Sony could drop the game function and release the PS3 as a nice toaster oven and it'll still outsell the Xbox-360 three to one.

I want to believe you. And I'd like it to be true. I love the PS2. I LURVVVED the PS1. That said, it isn't looking that way at the moment. I think Microsoft's weird customization bullshit strategy may work. Their game roster is FAR more interesting than any launch title list - ever.

I don't even remember any of the launch titles besides Condemned and Gears of War, and neither of those look all that great outside of the shiny. I was particularly underwhelmed by the gameplay vids of Condemned.

Blu-ray is a 'strategic initiative' I doubt if it will get dropped whatever the end cost.  The point of pushing it on the PS3 is to get other people (read developers and manufacturers) using it, developing for it, buying the equipment and service contracts to make blu-ray dvd's, etc...
