Its not a bad idea, but $3200? My copy over Poser 5 was under $300, and I could load up on a shit-ton of custom content for $2900. Ah well, I can see the advantage of having pre made models I guess, in time saved. The disadvantage I see though, is it doesn't take long for people to start recognising them. I can identify anything using the default Poser models at a glance.

The problem with things like this is that if it were to become popular people would get sick of it and then it would get unpopular again.

vampirehipi23: I would enjoy a book written by a monkey and turned into a movie rather than this.

Just my opinion, but they're far superior to the Poser default models. Plus, as a bonus, they don't have that crappy plastic skin.

Well, I don't think anyone is going to look at this as a viable commercial solution. At the very least, it allows proof of concept and demo development to get ramped up rather quickly with a minor initial investment.

But the thing is, they don't have to use the textures associated with those models. They can replace all the textures, and just use the underlying skeleton. Sure it costs a little more than using the stock characters, but it's still less than coming up with the characters from scratch. It isn't going to totally replace an art department, especially if you are talking about using them to replace interchangeable "extras" in games. Think the crowds in sports games, the mindless idiots walking around in GTA games on the streets, etc.

Sadly, compared to the work done by amateurs, this isn't that far beyond in quality and for mere micropayments you can probably fill poser/3ds/houdini/yourflavorofchoice with at least a thousand characters purchased from the smallfolk.
Simply too expensive. Too expensive at $1600 too. $1,000 would be reasonable. $10 a character instead of $36? Ok, I can see that.
Edit: Some of the textures are REALLY nice. Too bad they're not very imaginative.

Yea, that's my point. Sure the default characters for Poser look like ugly plastic mannequins, but you can go to a site like Daz3d or Renderosity and pick up photorealistic textures and entire body morphs for $10 a pop.

Other than not being a Windoze programmer or a graphics person, I just can't understand why I didn't invent this.

Well, I can't pull this up at work (evil army policy on intarweb usage), so I will instead comment on Sauced's avatar.
House of Flying Daggers was an AWESOME movie!
You should all run out and get it RIGHT NOW!
That is all.

None of the Poser or Daz3D models can be used in real time 3D work because A) they aren't licenced to be used so and B) their poly count is way too high.
Complete Characters isn't a bad piece of middleware but for hobbiests it's priced too high. For pros it's reasonable and lets them save a lot of time (just like the SpeedTree middleware which is also $3k-$5k). On the other hand it is build for 3DSMax which is already priced out of the hobbiest market to begin with.
You can get a lot of milage out of those models just by changing the textures and the three levels of LOD on each model is very nice. The disappointing part about it is that they aren't modular like the article made it sound. They are static models.
If they were modular the clothing would be seperate and would have join points on the models. Anyone would be able to build a piece of clothing to their specs and attach it to the character. That would be modular.
These are not.
