Mangled parts of a man who stowed away in the wheel well of a South African jetliner rained down on a New York suburb.
Part of the spine, hip and a leg still wearing a sock and an Adidas running shoe smashed onto the roof of Pam Hearne's garage Tuesday as a South African Airways flight to Kennedy Airport began its descent and lowered its landing gear.
When Hearne first saw the leg in the grass, it didn't look real, the New York Daily News said Wednesday.
"It was very blackened, as if it had been charred," she said.
A U.S. customs inspector discovered another leg and more remains in the wheel well after the jet landed, said Port Authority spokesman Tony Ciavolella.
Meanwhile, Ann Davis, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, said the agency has been in contact with South African Airways and is assessing whether security protocols were met at the airports in Johannesburg and Dakar, Senegal, where the flight originated and stopped over.
