I'm thinking of picking up Xbox Live just for this game. Is anyone else completely enamored by the entire project? Who all would I be playing with? Anyone?  shocked

Not that you care what I think, but taking a wait-and-see approach might be the best bet for this one. The controls sound like they could work quite nicely or completely suck ass. Not to mention stuff like ingame camera control which can be pretty dodgy on 3rd person games.

After I got sucked in by the hype (tripe?) surrounding Fable, I try not to get too excited by anything upcoming. BF2 being the exception, but even then I'll give it a few weeks and (hopefully) a demo run before I bite the bullet on it.

It looks nice, but I have reasonable doubts. It's the first game from a cinematic animation / marketing illustration company, and the E3 trailer showcased more cutscenes than gameplay. I'm afraid it might end up being more of an "interactive movie" than a game.

Nothing in this post represents the views of my current or previous employers.

I'm through about 3 chapters. The game is pretty kick ass. Targeting is fantastic, it sort of lends an Equilibrium Gunkata feel to running and gunning. The action isn't completely brainless - sure, brute force is an option, but dodging and strategy go a LONG way. There's a whole lot of cinematics using the ingame engine. This probably has some of the best dialogue I've heard since Deus Ex, but then, that bar is set PRETTY LOW.

I'll report more, but I'll say that this purchase hasn't let me down. Orson Scott Card has done good work here.

Edit: Gamespot absolutely railed on the game. It's not that I don't agree with what their saying, it's that they're comparing it to Halo. One is a multiplayer death match fps using controllers and one is a third person story driven one player game. I pity the fool who thinks you can compare two things because they're of the sci-fi flavor.

Just as an aside- I cannot STAND this trend. A cutscene is pretty, but it has exactly dick to do with the gameplay or even the in-game graphics. If you don't have enough ready or are embarrassed by what you DO have, skip the trailer. No one is buying the game for the 1337 cutscenes.

This game is about story. It uses mostly ingame graphics for cutscenes and they load quickly.

I have zero complaints about that. I'm playing the game to go from cutscene to cutscene. Much like, ahem, Deus Ex.

I think I'll rent this one soon. I'm playing Raze's Hell currently, which is a 3rd person shooter/melee type game which is pretty... interesting. Worth a rental if you've got some time to blow.

I hadnt heard about this game (wow is taking most of my time.) but was in EBgames last night and saw this. The guy at the counter said it got avarage reviews, and let me play it. I wasnt impressed with the 10 minutes I played. Yeah, I know thats not enough time to judge, but what really put me off was the way he jumped, very odd. When he would jump he would kind of through his body sideways.

Whats the deal with this game and xbox live?

*EDIT*
Speaking of Raze's Hell, whats the targetting like? is it a thumbstick target or a lock on system?

To put it simply, Raze's Hell has Halo style targeting.

Majesco has been doing good work lately. Raze also has unlockable Soccer and Golf games if that means anything to you. Me? I eat up unlockables for snacks. Love them.

Heh, another game struck by the Xbox game grading scale, where there are two ratings: Halo, and Not Halo.

I really hate Halo, too. These 3rd person games are kinda catchy though.

I'll go for the 2-week rental at Blockbuster for this, I think. Doesn't really engage me enough from what I've read to spend more than $7 on it.

I was thinking of picking it up after seeing the trailer for it before EPIII.

Control issues I can get around. The story's the thing and if it's keeping you in, then I'll give it a try.
(I played Deus Ex for the cutscenes too. As well a Marathon for the terminals)

I really cant stand the thumbstick targetting (halo). It drives me nuts. I guess its my years and years of playing PC with mouse and keyboard. I just cant get down with the thumbstick. I would LOVE a good 3rd person shooter with Zelda style lock on targetting. Thats what I was hoping Advent Rising would be.

Any one know anything like this? Maybe i should get Advent Rising.

Metroid Prime used lock-on targetting.

Starfox Assault uses lock-on targetting in the FPS/Non-Starship combat parts.

Advent Rising and Phantom Dust use lock on targeting, but you can still miss and they can still dodge, it's kind of nice.

Raze's Hell KIND-OF uses lock on targetting. When your target gets near a badguy, it'll 'snap-to' him so to speak, but you've got to be within, say, 5 pixels. And once snapped to the target, it'll only track him for about 5 pixels in each direction. Any more than that and it'll break.
