Shamelessly stolen from Gamespot:

Porn producer picks Blu-ray

Adult-film studio Digital Playground chooses Sony's next-gen format for its future offerings, citing PS3 support as primary reason.
Shortly after the PSP hit the market, adult video companies were already releasing pornographic UMDs and sexy video content tailor-made for the handheld. Now, another producer of salacious entertainment has chosen the format supported by Sony's next-gen console, the PlayStation 3. Digital Playground, makers of the 2006 Adult Video News Award Best Picture winner Pirates, told trade magazine AVN that it would support the next-generation Blu-ray disc format.

Digital Playground cofounder and director Joone said the fact the PS3 will support Blu-ray was the deciding factor in his company's choice, as it will give the format a huge installed base. "What I don't understand is why Microsoft didn't put HD-DVD players in the Xbox," Joone told AVN. "If they really wanted to get a jump on the market, that would have been a good move. As popular as the Xbox is, they could have had tons of consumers already using the format."

THE TRUTH! The truth I tell you!

And on topic - nice one. I was secretly rooting for the Blu-ray. What I wonder is will microsoft release a peripheral with a Blu-ray, along with the already announced HD-DVD one. Now that would be something real funny :P

As a matter of fact I swallowed one of these about two hours ago and the explanation is that it is, in fact, my hand.

Huh what? Microsoft couldn't have put an HD-DVD drive in the Xbox 360 since volume production of HD-DVD drives didn't start until the beginning of this year (players should be available to consumers around March). If they wanted to delay the Xbox 360 they could've included it but they were so hell bent on beating Sony to the market that they were willing to sacrifice that feature (for now).

Well, that settles the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD debate. Now we get Sony's brand of evil DRM instead of Microsoft's.

Of course, I am very slightly less disgusted with Sony than I am Microsoft, so that's all good to me.

Also, Pirates is indeed damn near art. I was amazed I ended up laughing as much as I did.

With autoinstalling rootkits from audio CDs and whatnot, I'd say that they're actually more evil than Microsoft by now.

Exactly. HD-DVD as an add-on instead of native was a BIG mistake. Could kill the format.

Blu-Ray doesn't allow copies while HD-DVD allows some copying, from what I understand. I'd rather have HD-DVD, I think.

Save us Jon Lech Johansen, you're our only hope.

In a stroke of pure irony, Sony's XCP DRM rootkit was made possible due to the illegal inclusion of software written by Jon Lech Johansen.

As you know, better technology can't compete with the mindshare of the masses. PS3 seals the deal imo, but the 360 could've helped. I know I'm not happy with the thought of buying an add-on to watch DVDs, most likely I'll still be using my pc with an internal drive...if they make them because, you know, TEH PIARATES!!

I'm reading a bio on Muddy Waters and they were talking about how during WW2 there was not only a shortage of shellac to make records, but a bill was passed to limit record production because it would negatively impact live performance profits. Same as it ever was, ineffectual as it ever was. You have to prosecute pirates, not everyone else.

I'm totaly uninformed but I wouldn't be suprised if Blu-Ray turns out to be copieable. I mean weren't we hearing the same thing when DVDs were about to show up?

The difference is HD-DVD allows some copying in the DRM, whereas Blu-Ray does not. Blu-Ray would require a crack similar to DeCSS.

If it's a math issue someone, somewhere will solve it.  There are huge craniumed geeks out there that lust for that sort of thing.  If it's that no one will be authorized to produce hardware that allows writing to a Blu-Ray Disc then some company will find an alternative method because the cash income potential for selling blu-ray writers would be enormous.

If it is an actual technology limitation issue then it might take a little longer, but probably not much for than 3-5 years.

Just math. Pioneer's BDR101A recordable Blu-ray computer drive should appear in the next month.

Yup. As long as the underlying hardware is not "secure" (from the copy protection maufacturers' perspective, not the user's) these things can always be cracked given enough time and effort. E.g. Microsoft's Windows Media 9 DRM format has been cracked by some enterprising hackers in Japan. Sony has shown that it is willing to go to great lengths to protect its content, however, so I would expect the Blu-Ray format to be an especially tough nut to crack (I'm expecting some of the encryption will be tied to the underlying drive hardware).
