Raimi interview...

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=30954

Highlights...

Quote
Spider-Man director Sam Raimi told SCI FI Wire that Sony Pictures plans to make six of the comic-inspired films, and that he'd consider helming them if he feels as strongly about them as he does about the upcoming third installment.

Raimi said the upcoming third Spider-Man film will in part chart Peter Parker's (Tobey Maguire) interior journey as he deals with his feelings about the death of his beloved Uncle Ben.

He's just been focused on being this do-gooder. And never really even dealing with the death of his uncle, just paying down his guilt with every criminal he brings to justice, never really addressing his own guilt that he feels in his heart and coming to terms with it.

Thomas Haden Church (Sideways) will play a new as-yet-unidentified villain who is appropriate to that emotional journey, Raimi added. "We had to choose a villain that represented a proper obstacle in the path of that growth," Raimi said. "And so, though I'd rather not say who Thomas Haden Church is playing just yet—because Sony likes to make a proper presentation to the fans along with Avi Arad from Marvel Comic books—he was chosen because he represented that proper obstacle to ... Peter Parker's growth."

This would mean the goblin storyline does not have to be resolved in 3, which was previously thought to be Raimi's last spiderman film.

In other news Sam Raimi was quoted as saying, "If I don't screw this up I could have the biggest and bestest money hat of them all."

I'd say not only the Spiderman films, but also Singer's X-Men franchise - both are the yardstick comic book adaptions will be held to fo the foreseeable future.

Then again, Superman and Batman were great for the first two installments, and then just went nosediving...

Agreed, 2 was better than 1. It didn't have that idiotic looking Goblin mask. Maybe Church is playing Nightmare or Mephisto? Though I'm quite sure having the devil as a villain in a super-hero flick would probably enrage all sorts of people. Six films? I'm not sure anyone, even Raimi can keep it alive for that long, especially with the actor's aging over the course of filming. I mean, at 2 years between films, that's 12 years for the actors. So unless he's doing the retirement of Spidey, I just don't know.

I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that he's playing Sandman.

That '70s "Spider-Man"!

By Charlie Amter Thu May 19,10:34 PM ET

Topher Grace is checking out of the basement and into the big time.

Coming on the heels of his last regular installment of That '70s Show, the actor has been tapped to join the cast of Spider-Man 3, Columbia Pictures announced Thursday.

Grace will join one of the biggest franchises in film, appearing alongside original Spider Man cast members Tobey Maguire,
Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and recently announced addition Thomas Haden Church in the would-be blockbuster, due May 4, 2007.

Sam Raimi will return to direct the highly anticipated third installment, which starts shooting early next year.

"Topher Grace is an extraordinarily talented actor and will be perfect for the complexities of the role we are developing," Raimi said in a press release.

Of course, Raimi was mum on exactly what those "complexities" would be, leaving it up to the movie rumor sites to begin speculating on just which Marvel character Grace will essay.

Likewise, when Church was announced as Spidey's newest cinematic ne'er-do-well, Riami was equally coy, saying the Oscar-nominated Sideways star "will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."

It's widely assumed that multiple villains will appear in Spider-Man 3, and Grace is already an odds-on favorite to be one of them.

Meanwhile, Chlo Sevingy, who who has openly campaigned for a slot in the film, hasn't yet made the cut.

The actress has suggested she would make a perfect Black Cat in Spider-Man 3, but, per fan Website GoblinJournals.com, an "anonymous source" close to the film says there will be no Black Cat role in the new film; instead, the two baddies will be Sandman and Hobgoblin.

Villain issues aside, Spider-Man 3 is about the closest thing there is to a box-office lock.

Spider-Man 2 smashed records when it opened last summer, becoming the third film ever to earn more than $40 million in a single day. The film went on the gross $373 million at the U.S. box office. The original Spider-Man grossed $403 million domestically during its 2002 run. So far, the webslinger franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

This represents Grace's biggest movie role to date. The actor, who along with Ashton Kutcher, decided to leave That '70s Show to pursue movie roles (they will both be back as guest stars in a handful episodes next season), has racked up solid cinematic credits. He most recently starred in In Good Company and the indie flick P.S., and had smaller roles in Traffic, Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve.

Meanwhile, in other big Marvel-related casting news,
Kelsey Grammer has been tapped to play Beast--the super-intelligent blue behemoth, in the forthcoming X-Men 3, according to Variety.

He'll be joined by two other new X-Men recruits, Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowcat, who can pass through walls (Lost's Maggie Grace is reported to be the top candidate), and the winged Angel.

They'll square off against another evil mutant, the metal-clad giant Juggernaut, to be played by Vinnie Jones (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).

British director Matthew Vaughn is taking over behind the camera from Bryan Singer (who is helming the new Superman). X-Men 3 is slated to hit theaters over Memorial Day 2006.

Sevingy as Black Cat? She's smoking crack. That's a dogshit looking actress if there ever was one.

But she is willing to smoke pole on camera. That goes a long way in Hollywood. Or at least it should.  evil

Cinescape was saying that Grace IS going to be a villain, but of course, no one would say.

So we have a possible new Goblin/Hobgoblin, and a possible Sandman.

Ain't It Sellout News is claiming that their "sources" are saying Sandman and Venom are the two villians. I think Hayden Church could play either, Grace neither.

Maybe Grace is going to be the Black Cat.

I haven't seen anything to do date from Grace that would give me an idea what Spider Man villian he would be. I don't get it.

He might have made a decent Parker at one point in time, but this just seems like a case of hiring him because he's got some talent. Not out of any relevancy to a specific role. I don't know....He could play Mysterio maybe.

Maybe if he puts on 20-30lbs of muscle. Topher Grace is a toothpick.

I wonder if they'd make a symbiote-powered Spidey movie.  Might be too out there for most folks.

I'd love to see Maximum Carnage, but that'll never happen in a movie.  Too violent (for a film that'd try for PG or PG-13, anyway), too long of an arc, too many guest characters, too much setup.

One possible role for Topher Grace is that clumsy Frog-suit guy who wanted to be Spidey's sidekick way back then. I'd actually like that - but it would introduce a sideplot (the frog-suit belongs to his father, and he doesn't like his past being ripped up etc., drama ensues) - and as far as I can tell they have avoided sidetracking in the movies so far.

If they're willing to go out of order, I'd love to see them skip to the Mary Jane Peter Parker wedding and use at least 2 if not 4 movies to play out the more dramatic arcs. And there are a couple villains I'd love for them to do, but it'd suck, so I'll keep my mouth shut.

Why must they do 2 villians?  All comic-book based movies with 2 villians have sucked, sole possible exception being Batman 2, and that one was just Meh.  Its hard enough developing a hero, a love interest, and a coherent villian in 2 hours without adding in a fourth factor.

Then again, there were rumors of a hob-gob/Doc Oc team up when the first Spiderman 2 details started to appear, and the real movie was pure Doc Oc and the better for it, so here is hoping.

Hmm...Superman 2 had Lex and Zod. I, for one, think it's still the best of that series.

Eh, I guess. I really don't count that as 2 villians myself.  Lex and his henchy where there mainly for comic relief, and to further the plot at a point or two vis a vis Zod.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but even then the tally becomes 1 good, 1 meh, and umpteen crappy movies.

Superman 2 had a few things going for it on the "multiple villains" front.  1) Lex was a pre-established villain.  You knew his motives and his personna from the first movie, no need for a backstory.  Ursa, Non and Zod were easily explained in 10 mins of backstory, after that they've got the same powers as Supes.   Without the need to spend 1/2 to 3/4 of the movie in backstory and character introduction they were able to focus on the plot itself and character development.

Unless they were to do Green Goblin II, spidey 3 won't have that luxury and will have to explain backstory for sandman and whoever this second villain is going to be.  (And technicaly Bats 2 had 3 villans if you include Christopher Walkin's character, which is why I felt it was kind of weak.  Too many convoluted plots that all felt really half baked.)

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.
