Chase Suspect Shot Dead on TVProvided By: The Associated Press Last Modified: 5/12/2005 9:59:36 AM LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- A high-speed chase being televised live ended with police fatally shooting a suspected car thief brandishing a gun. The nearly 40-minute chase Wednesday reached speeds of up to 100 mph. At one point, the driver crashed into a highway guardrail, and he also came within several feet of hitting a man and his 4-year-old daughter on a residential street. The driver, whose identity was not immediately released, was shot after he jumped out of the car with a gun in his hand, and seemed to be heading toward a shopping center, police said. News footage showed the man running from the car as officers open fire. A gun flies from the victim's hand, but the man appears to be reaching for something at his waist before collapsing. KABC-TV, which followed the chase south of Los Angeles and broadcast the shooting live, immediately ordered its helicopter camera to zoom out for a wide shot. A reporter urged viewers to prevent their young children from watching. The station later defended its coverage. "Obviously, no one knew shots were going to be fired," William Burton, a station spokesman, told the Los Angeles Times. "The instant we did, we went to a wide shot." KNBC-TV decided not to air the chase live because it was "apparent to the seasoned eye that it was going to end badly," news director Robert Long said. Two passengers who bailed out during the pursuit remained in custody. Police learned the car had been reported stolen during a home invasion robbery earlier this week.

Why is this even news? This happens like three times a week in SoCal, doesn't it?

Cue 1 week of the media circle jerk discussion over whether or not live television should air potentially deadly situations and the media's ignored responsibility to the public.

Hey, there were no commercials on LA tv during the King riots. That was cool. Of course, there were no tv shows besides news coverage, either...and roving gangs of toughs in the streets looking for white guys to beat down...
I moved two days later to Frisco. Nobody should live in LA.

My high school graduation party was usurped by footage of OJ fleeing in the white Suburban. Everyone sat around the tube instead of putting cash in my money hat. Wah!

That's cool. The Led Zep reunion destroyed my (um first) wedding reception.
Mainly because I refused to leave the house until they finished the set.

DERAIL: Talking about reunions... Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker have re-formed Cream. They might be elderly gents now but the clip I saw sounded like they haven't lost a thing. Jack Bruce still has 'that' voice and, from what I understand, Ginger Baker no longer falls over. They're going on tour, too. Maybe they'll play at Schmoo's rest home. http://www.whereseric.com/clapton/news/2005/05/cream_monday_may_2_2005.htm

It's still great, and it's still Cream, but just a little bit is missing -- like an SG and a Marshall. If you know what "woman tone" is, then you'll hear what I mean.
