“I love the Space Marines,” I shouted at the gods. “I love them, and I’ll buy all of their licensed merchandise. All of it.”

“Everything?” the gods said.

“Every damned thing. I’m their biggest fan,” I said. Smugly.

But the gods hate hubris and absolutes. So to test my resolve, they’ve sent Warhammer 40K: Regicide down to Earth. Regicide is chess, my friends. It is a 3D Space Marines-versus-Orks reincarnation of Battle Chess. I must admit, even my love of Games Workshop is being tested. Well done, gods.

Now I suppose that I’m being unfair to Regicide — it’s not straight chess with collectible armies. The game is visibly rooted in chess but there are a number of departures including terrain, ranged attacks, and who knows what else. A lot of effort has gone into the presentation, as the in-engine trailer below demonstrates. That luxurious cinematic look might be a bit of an Achilles heel with a game like this — will you still be exhilarated by that no-look chainsword impaling animation after you’ve seen it three or four times?

Much will be forgiven if the gameplay is tactically interesting and the animations skippable or otherwise turn-off-able, and there’s plans for cross-platform online multiplayer, which bodes well. We’ll see when Regicide arrives for tablets and PCs later this year — you can pre-order it now if you’re brave.

Regicide, the strategy game based on chess set in the classic Warhammer 40,000 Universe from Games Workshop is an adaptation of ‘Regicide’, a board game described from the Warhammer 40,000 universe with similarities to the M2-era chess; played by mankind for over thirty-eight thousand years. Regicide blends board-game strategy mechanics with dynamic tactical abilities.

Regicide set for launch in Q2 2015, is easy to learn, but difficult to master - think outside the board and explore a new take on the rules of traditional chess: command different races with unique abilities, fight for varied game objectives, and call in strikes from off the board as you face off in multiple game modes. Battle across a single-player Blood Angels’ campaign. Challenge opponents worldwide in both ‘Regicide’ and ‘classic’ matches online, with ELO-rated stats and several game modes. - See more at: http://www.warhammer40kregicide.com/about-the-game#sthash.I6Fp2ABL.dpuf

Warhammer 40,000 Regicide is a Chess Based, Turn Based strategy game that adds a random element to the game of chess by allowing you to take extra actions after your move.

But dont worry you can BUY new armies and stuff as well as DLC!!! And look at your choice of limited edition game mode bundles!!

Man, fuck Games Workshop and their digital division. All anyone fucking wants from them is a recreation of the 40k tabletop rules with DLC armies and/or customizable painted armies with multiplayer. That's fucking it. That's all we fucking want.

Instead they've given us: a lane combat shit piece, 2 3rd person action games, an in-development MMOFPS that may or may not be the next incarnation of Planetside, a 4v4 multiplayer MOBA game, 2 RTS'es, and Battlefleet Gothic (which to be fair, does actually look like a translation of the tabletop game). I mean, a goddamn MOBA FFS?

What you want would devalue the physical brand in the mind of the execs wrapped-up in the brick and mortar world still. Just like MTG:O until such time as those execs are gone you'll never see it. Best to just ignore it all.

I have some hope that since they recently put a bullet into the head of Warhammer Fantasy, they may actually let somebody make a straight digital version of it.  One can dream at least.

The scary part is just how much money they could charge for the thing I'm talking about. $60? PFFFTTT. That shit's nothing. That's the cost of ONE GODDAMN BOX of some of the GW minis. If the game engine was good, they could probably charge $20 for one unit DLC that was only part of an army on top of the $60 for the base game. Horse armor would be fucking peanuts compared to the things they could charge for if they had one brain between them. And it would still cost less than buying the plastic both for the consumer AND for the company to make.

It's sick how much money they are leaving on the table.

Like I said, Warhammer Fantasy.  Dead and gone.  So maybe.  Not that.....abomination they replaced it with, which is still technically a physical product.   ACK!

I mean dear god oh mighty.  How the fuck can one company be that stupid/incompetent.

They could give it to Chris Roberts, he seems to know how to make money for nothing

(though I'm uncertain if he knows how to get chicks for free).

Iain has given us insight into this in the past, though I always forget the details. I think the gist has always been; "Lol, dumb people with luck."

I made a few :effortposts: over in the SA traditional games forum. Mostly it comes down to the fact that for most of the time they have been the only game in town. Sure there were other miniatures games - quite often better miniatures games - but not many of those let you do massed battles with fantasy or sci-fi miniatures. Ubiquity is also a strength in itself. If you want to play a miniatures wargame against strangers, your chances that those strangers will have a WFB rulebook and compatible army is a lot higher than the odds of them having a stuff to play Battlesystem or Warzone. So, for 30 years, there's been a culture of invincibility at the company that is entirely underwritten by the (very considerable) talents of a few key staff and is being squandered by a lot of guys with 3 star ability and 5 star drive.

These days though, it looks as though Mantic is going to eat their lunch as long as they don't fuck up somehow. A lot of people on WFB forums or Fb groups seem to be more interested in migrating across to Kings of War rather than playing the pantomime bullshit that is Age of Sigmar.

- And in stranger Iains, even Death may die -

To be fair, Warhammer 40000: Space Marine was a damn fun game; I wish they'd make another like it.

Fyi, the MMO is no longer Planetside- it's a lobby shooter with a "control the continent" overlay determined by who amassed the most points on certain maps.  Very glad I did not buy anything there.

Shadow of the Horned Rat was super fun, pretty sure Dark Omen was good too. DoW was great. Bloodbowl is bloodbowl and Gothic looks like it will be Gothic.

The Mordheim game sadly looks like shit from what I've seen of it.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

I figure it like this: if the stripper jumped off the stage and sucked you off, you'd leave the club as soon as you zipped up your pants.  Instead, you stay around buying watery drinks and throwing money on the ground for hours.  Or, in the case of GW, years.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

They don't have a digital division, unless you count BL and digital codexes. They're just very open to shovelware companies licencing their IP.
