Iain Banks has been diagnosed with gall bladder cancer and is "extremely unlikely" to live beyond a year.

This is very sad, he's only 61.

Great writer, great character, great politics. I sincerely hope he and his loved ones find a way to make the coming months as little of a nightmare for them as possible.

Boo.  That's got to be rough, especially finding out like that with basically no symptoms until it's too late.

Damn. Lot of respect for the man, both as an author and in general.

Meh. The world will lose an amazing writer sooner than it should.

Get your bits checked, people.

That blows. Same age and circumstances as my dad (oh hey, here's some stage 4 metastatic cancer, too bad for you!).

Fuck cancer.

Man, I just finished his culture stuff, too.  That was some superb shit.  This really blows.

Yea this is a real shame, I feel bad for him, especially as it sounds like he didn't have a lot of notice.

Halfway through his Culture books. Really love them.

Can't have too many regrets. He has really lived. And written so much! As Iain Banks and Iain M Banks. Complicity and The Crow Road are insanely good non-scifi books of his.

I actually didn't know who this was, wikied it and then realised I'd actually read one of his culture books.

He probably had more effect on me than any other author except maybe RAH.  I'm not going to go into detail, make it seem I think this is more of a tragedy for me than him and his family.  I just want to make it clear that I believe we're all losing something important.

I think every time we lose an artist -- any artist -- is particularly tragic. We never have enough of those. :(

Well, this sucks.

And Soln said exactly what I was thinking, he's one of the few authors whose books I've read more than once.

Iain Banks dies of cancer aged 59.

That didn't take long, less than 2 months after he announced he had gall bladder cancer :(  His last book, The Quarry, is about cancer and will be released in a couple of weeks. Glad he managed to finish that, very sad that he's dead so young.
