I'm really starting to regret this purchase. I fail to see the improvements over previous MB titles. This feels like a Warband mod. A bad one at that. How is it that the Musket mod for Warband feels more stable/polished than Fire and Sword?

Apparently this was developed in 2009 by a 3rd party studio and released in eastern Europe. Then "polished up" for the Warband engine by Talewords and re-released for the rest-of-the-world market.
But yes, it's a bit 'meh...' overall.

Edit: What I'd really like would be Mount and Blade 2, featuring a complete new graphic engine and the most sensible new concepts/improvements from player mods. Maybe if there is still room left in the box they could stuff in 1 or 2 of those production values. That be great.

I'm 35 hours in and I really like the game when you get up above the 10th level. The ability to train up mercenary troops and equip them with badass armor can make you a killing machine. I'll put cossack calvary and tatar infantry with polish marksman, soup up their inventory, and murder cities with my elites.
One downside I ran into is that the Islamic forts have pathing issues on the ladder sieges. This is overcome by the fact I can just blow a hole in their walls and call it a day.
