Wasn't sure if this was the correct place to put this, but if you have a .edu email account, Amazon is offering free Prime memberships: http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info?Free 2 day shipping. I signed up, and they even sent me an email that my current paid- for Prime membership will be partially refunded. Pretty good deal.

Sweet. Thanks. That 2 grand in tuition I pay every year to not write my dissertation is finally paying off!

How's that not coming, by the way? I'd join you on that particular trail if I could figure out a way to pursue a doctorate without quitting my job, or a way to make all my bills disappear.

I wonder if that also works for faculty? I've had a .edu address for years.
Time to check it out!

Get a job associated with a university. That's what I did.

Just a word of caution. It's a one year free trial of Amazon Prime. I assume that they will automagically bill you for a year after that. Since I always forget when I sign up for these things, I'm not going to risk an $79 charge in a year. Good deal if you can remember to cancel though.

I've been a prime member for years now, but it's only worth it if you buy something from there like once a month. I usually do all of my christmas shopping on there, so that makes it up in one large swoop, not to mention all the games I buy that aren't on steam. Now that I have a kindle, though, I only tend to buy hardcovers that I want to keep as bookshelf pieces after I'm done with them. The Kindle has made Mass Market Paperback a thing of the past for me.

I'm buying a good amount from Amazon (basically any games not from Steam, and almost everything else throughout the year especially during the holiday sales which kill me) and I still can't see this worth it since almost everything is free shipping anyways. Sure, it is improved shipping at a discounted rate, but I'm one of those people who have patience when it comes to waiting for items.
Awesome way for them to promote their service though. It's aimed at a good demographic, as I doubt many students would remember to cancel, and then there are others who will genuinely enjoy the service and Amazon will have them as a happier customer.

I've gotten free trials of Amazon Prime before. They'll often do some sort of deal where you get it if you buy certain educational items. I got it once by buying a 99 cent copy of Romeo and Juliet. ANYWAYS, it does default to renew. However, you can go into the settings and tell it not to auto renew when the time is up. As in, you can immediatly change this option. So as long as you remember to do that as soon as you sign up, its fine. No need to worry about canceling it a year from now.

I fucking love my Amazon Prime membership, even at $80 a year. But I'm also the kind of person who a.) buys shit at least once a month and b.) always wants it RIGHT FUCKING NOW. I'm not even patient enough for my free second day delivery, I pay the $4 for next day usually. I'm sure I've saved many times more than I've paid for this, so it's a win for me.

Just bought all sorts of stuff with this. Love the Prime membership.
Also, the exact procedure is:
Log into Amazon.com Click the edu upgrade option Supply @edu email address Check @edu email address Click registration link in said email Log into your Amazon.com account again Prime!
What I'm trying to say is that if you have an amazon account and someone willing to supply you with a @edu email address (like, say a brother in college), you now have free prime for a year.
And Teleku is right, there's an option right there to turn off autorenew. It's great :)

Or, you can have your brother sign up, and invite him to use your membership, or vice versa. You can share a membership with up to four people.
I love Amazon.
Oh, and if anyone ever needs to buy something from them, and doesn't want to use a credit card, you can buy Amazon Gift Codes at Western Union, and the last couple of times I did it, there was no service fee for doing so.
Also, those Coin Star change counter things that normally charge a % to get cash back give Amazon gift codes for the full value of the coins you put in.

Loved Prime when I had it but never renewed at full price since most items I buy are over $25 and ship free with some patience. I still missed having it though.
Thanks for the heads up on this deal.

How's that not coming, by the way? I'd join you on that particular trail if I could figure out a way to pursue a doctorate without quitting my job, or a way to make all my bills disappear. I'm completely stalled out. I've been out of the academic scene for so long that I'm just not doing anything. After working and wanting to hang with my kid, working on a dissertation is way down the list on "things I have time to do." I should have just cranked it out the second I passed my comps. So I'm simultaneously frustrated with myself and apathetic about it.

Wife signed up for prime accidentally over Christmas. Then I realized, "I can buy ANYTHING I want from amazon now."
Those 12 cans of U.S. Senate Bean Soup that used to cost $15.00 to ship... FREE! That palm tree for my mother that costs more to ship than buy.... FREE! Plus 2 day shipping...
