So, who's paying attention? I figured since it's one of the biggest tennis tourneys of the year I'd make up a thread for you closet tennis people. So far, I will say this: Maria Sharipova is HAWT.

That's the one where they play on grass instead of clay or metal, right?

101.2 decibals of grunting.  That would wake up the neighbors, probably the whole neighborhood.

The tennis has been good so far and there's been a minimal amount of rain delays.  Due to the lack of rain it's playing a little bit differently than normal as the ball's staying up a little higher and you're not getting as many irregular bounces.

Couple of very large exits so far with Henin-Hardenne and Serena Williams both going out and on the guys side Britain's own Tim Henman failed to come through again but this time bowing out much earlier.   The Brits then shifted their hopes to a young Scot, who today lost in 5 sets after having a 2-0 lead.   cry

Still looks like we're headed to another Federer / Roddick final because Federer is god on grass and Roddick's half is filled with dirt ballers, Frenchies and other folks that won't be too much trouble for him.  Gals could be 1v2 also if Davenport makes it past Kim Clijsters.  6 out of 16 women are Russians.  eek.

The coverage so far has been pretty good from ESPN who tends to fuck it up by being too US-centric by showing boring ass routs as long it features an American and skipping over some of the better matches.  They've showed a lot of entertaining matches instead of just going by the star power and recognizability of the names.  Then comes NBC and we get footage of Roddick destroying some guy named Igor while some other terrific matches go ignored. But I guess it's to be expected, they only have a short time period to show the tennis and they want to show off the top tier talent to get people(Americans) marginally interested in tennis again.  Of course, an out of shape Serena getting pummeled isn't the best tennis ambassador.

BTW, if you're even a smidge interested in tennis or just watch to see something extraordinary, try to watch Federer play. He's possibly the most talented individual to ever pick up the tennis racket.  This guy would have dominated in any era.  He's had some bad luck in the Slams this year (losing final in Australia and semi in France to guys playing on their birthdays /boggle ), but this is a guy that lost only one match to top 10 ranked players last year.

Anyhow, I think the only person that cared about tennis at all on this board was Bruce.  But I'm sure that won't stop someone from throwing out a "technology has ruined the game!!!!" jibber jabber reply (I seem to remember a few of these last time tennis was mentioned).  The sport is at a good point with a lot of upcoming and exciting talent, unfortunately, not much of it is American.

Tennis is a tough sport to learn.

I tend to either hit homeruns, or somehow hit the edge/side of my racket and hook the ball to impossible angles. A lot.

Tennis is sport, like golf, where it's really in your best interest to get a couple lessons if you want to play.   And like golf, you're going to be HORRIBLE at first.

You have to kind of stick with it or learn with someone who's rather good at the sport and patient.  It's a lot of fun, just not very accessible in some areas due to lack of lighted courts (courts are pretty much easy to find at all high schools, just the quality can be anything from passable to something out of the X-men danger room).

Sharipova is very popular in Japan. So much so that she's been in a couple tv shows.

My biggest complaint with tennis is letting them get another server after a bad one. You should get one chance at it, buuuuuuddy.

That'd never work :) Holding serve would be a nigh impossibilty and you'd really lose a lot of strategy involved with that aspect of the game.

Gotta love this quote from Serena:

Quote from: poor loser
"I've never been one to lose well," Williams said, tugging a pink visor low over her eyes and wiping away tears. "She didn't have to do anything exceptionally well today. She just pretty much had to show up."

All of her post match press conferences are like that. I don't think she's ever said anything positive about anyone that's beaten her.  She needs to drop some pounds, she's gone from looking like a linebacker in a skirt to a fullback in skirt.

I just got back from a trip to Japan about 2 weeks ago, and you are VERY correct.  They have life sized card board cut outs of her drinking Pepsi everywhere.  And giant posters of her drinking Pepsi where ever they couldn't fit card board cut outs.  I also saw her in several commercials (oddly enouph, they also kept playing this car commerical that had Bruce Willis in it.  He only said one word in the entire thing).

In all seriousness, people swear up and down that I'm Italian when they look at me, and don't believe me when I tell them otherwise.

Also, I'm now dropping my Roman nomenclature.

Fuck Rome, I'm all Rome'ed out, and I want to fucking leave.

I know you're not Japanese but, as a Jew, you have VERY strong Japanese tendancies.
