Operating Thetan One

on: July 17, 2009, 12:06:41 PM

Picked this up a couple days ago on XBL for 800 points. I hate to admit it, but I actually did not play the game as a kid, so it's pretty cool getting a chance to experience it now. Graphics are fully redone and full voiceover is added. Otherwise, it's apparently exactly the same game.

I had missed this one too (though I played one or two of the later ones) and with the voice acting added and such it is still pretty entertaining. It isn't really a long game - I finished it in 2 nights, and one of those nights I also had a 2 hour Ulduar raid and read Stardust - but it also isn't very expensive. I played it on PC via Steam, but it should play just fine on an Xbox too. There are a couple things that are handled a bit clunkily but then it was still the early days of this sort of thing.

Picked up the PC version on Steam. Very cool to play this game again. Does the 360 version let you seamlessly swap back and forth between the original and new version? It's really fucking cool how it works. You hit F10 and it morphs into whatever version you weren't playing, seamlessly.

I hate his haircut. No really, thats why I won't buy it. His hair sucks. If they give him the Telltale haircut I'll buy this game.

Apart from super Mario bros, this was the first game I played, the first game I had on my own computer (thanks dad!), and the first game I ever beat.  Playing this brings forth so much powerful nostalgia that I can't realistically make a fair judgement of it as a remake.  The most I'll say is, "It feels nice to come back home."

Thanks, Lucasarts, even for the ridiculous haircut.

Yeah, it's the back button -- I was flopping back and forth to listen to the music.

I didn't particularly notice it while playing.  Only when I actually took a moment to "look" did the differences jump out.  The voice acting is fantastic.

Do tell. I enjoyed Loom. Is there a remake of that in the future?

Don't like the new art.

Agreed. It's very obviously rushed/outsourced/interned. None of it is "painted". Compare to adventure games being made now by niche developers, and it's downright embarassing.

The new version of The Dig though, is great. They have a smoothing mode that renders the characters at a nice higher resolution but leaves the backgrounds untouched. I wish they had done the same with MI.

Its a $10 game and the art had to match the engine/layout/whatever of the old game. I'm not sure what you were expecting, honestly.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it to look better, or at least on par with the original artwork. What's the point of redoing it if it looks worse afterwards? More pixels don't automatically equal better art.

It does look better, particularly all the background/scenery.

Guys, if the new art style is that much of a problem for you, then just press f10 once and play it oldschool.  Jesus.

I'm definitely not fond of Guybrush new look, but I absolutely love the scenery and backgrounds, they look gorgeous (and it probably helps that I'm playing it at 1920x1200).
