What gets me is, that's 338 million internet users who don't even use the non-Mandarin sites we think of as the internet giants.
They do.. Just depends. From what I can tell, Hong Kong is different too. Also, in addition to their own mercs and portals, it's interesting that Google doesn't completely kick ass in China, or in Asia in general. The balance of internet giants is different. Yahoo is generally more popular. Facebook is getting popular, but shit nobody uses seems popular as well.. like Friendster. [edit] Err.. in a way, you could say that places like Y! have simply done a better job at presenting themselves as Chinese websites, and have a lot to offer for the region. Not sure about China or HK, but in Japan, I believe Y! Japan is even a separate company than Yahoo. So there, it actually is a de facto "Asian" site. Google can't compete with it, so I think they're just trying to buy themselves into the mobile market or something (as a default search service). Err, sorry if I'm derailing.
