Thief 4 Eidos-Montréal Announces Development of Newest Title in the Legendary Series Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil its previously secret second title in development at the studio, Thief™ 4, the next instalment in the legendary series. The original Thief game, Thief: The Dark Project redefined first person gaming and established an entirely new genre of stealth based game play. The critically and commercially acclaimed Thief series has won numerous awards and accolades including GameSpy Hall of Fame, GameSpot Greatest Games of All Time and The Academy of Interactive Arts And Sciences Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Development. Eidos-Montréal, which is also currently producing the much anticipated Deus Ex™ 3, has recruited the very best core team for the development of Thief 4. The team is comprised of industry veterans who have worked on an incredible collection of AAA titles and who each bring personal expertise in their respective fields. “We’re in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious and exciting project for Eidos,” said Stéphane D’Astous, General Manager at Eidos-Montréal. “While it’s too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market.” Development is under way and the team is looking to recruit the very best talent as production ramps up. Well, I'd like to say something like, "They can't screw it up any worse than the last one."
But, of course, I'd be wrong.

The last one raped the franchise indeed, but most certainly wasn't a bad game.

Uh, yes it was. I made it to exactly the same point every time. The Keystone Kops moment.
Some faction hunting you kills an innocent. Guards walk by, BLAME YOU for the death, start hunting for you. Other factions fight the guards. Citizens run around screaming. Suddenly the city hub is nothing but a couple factions chasing each other around while the innocents scream and run around.
From a gameplay angle, maybe I could sneak and hope none of them blunder into my hiding spot.
But it's clearly a buggy AI that fucks up the game.
Up until then, the game is pretty fucking good.

For T3 they jumped on the GTA bandwagon like everyone else. Not sure what today's Ripoff Special is, but I look forward to finding out. Probably Oblivion-sandbox.

wat I don't have any other explanation. Meet people for missions, run around a city full of hostiles, "emergent gameplay", etc. I'm not saying you were driving a car.

The Thief series was always known for "emergent gameplay".
That they moved some of the game play out from the missions and into getting around the city doesn't make it a GTA clone.

It's not a clone. Anyway, what was the reasoning for putting in the "you can roam freely around The City" then? It might have worked out, sure, because it sounds fine when you say it fast, but right now I'm not sure it could have turned out well. I suppose the timing may have been merely coincidental but I'm not big on coincidences. I'm big on "Hey, can you get those people to put in some free-roaming stuff? ... Well, you know, in between missions. ... How about you have the player wander around looking for things instead of those outdated cutscenes? ... Well I was getting to that. There are different factions and you take sides and do missions for them. ... Right, you will work for one group and piss off another. Yeah, they can attack you while you go from place to place, that's what everyone is doing. ... Sure, I'm sure, it's what is selling, don't you know that's what Naughty Dog is doing with Jak 3? Don't forget San Andreas is coming out. ... Well tell'em to do it anyway, I already wrote out the PR."

I was given Thief 3 for the PC, for free. I think I made it through 2 missions before I switched computers. I never bothered to reinstall the game on the new computer, and it's sat on my desk for a year. It truly was fucked up shit. The menu looked like it was made of Lego pieces for mentally retarded children, the controls were mediocre and it just didn't click. It was better than Deus Ex Invisible War, but not by much. Both are shit. I expect DX3 and T4 to suck sweat beads off the hairy backs of Russian autocrats in a Moscow bath house.

Ok, Yeg, I'll give you that one. The emergent stuff was there, nice free-form levels.
But that city hub thing is where things went south about midway through.
Haem, once you get used to the controls and UI, it was actually a strong contender in the series, only bollocked up by the keystone kops AI later on. That's what made it even worse: solid gameplay, good graphics and sound.
Although I did mod the game with high-res textures and a mod that turned the bright blue glowie into a muted bronze.

I'd be interested in a mod that let me just play the missions and avoid the "let's go to town and buy shit" mechanic. Doesn't matter, Looking Glass is dead and you can't go home again.

Taffer!
I loved the random citizens running around and screaming, people fighting other people for no apparent reason, was great.
Also pouring oil on the ground and getting the scary demon thing at the end to fall in the water and drown was pretty nice.

Thief 3 was the only thief I played. How sad. Are there texture mods for the first two?
Yeg - I'm surprised no one modded it out or fixed some of the more predominant issues in the game.

Honestly I haven't looked. There is such a bounty of fan-missions (FMs) for the first two games that the only reason one might want to play FMs on the third is for graphics. Not for atmosphere, and rope arrows are missing. Really the game disgusted me on a few key points and I have simply moved on.
