So I want to set up a small site to host my blog and some other crap that I have scattered across the internet. I need a domain registration and some basic hosting (enough to hold a decent sized photo gallery lets say). Any recommendations on who to use for that sort of thing?
I'm not lazy, I want to hear recommendations not just links to google hits.

They handle it all and the blog service tied to your domain is free, plus five free email addresses and other assorted items... You can repoint the web page to google.com/a for free hosting too.

My only experience are with Godaddy and Dreamhost, and I know how much people hate the both of them. I've never had problems with Dreamhost, but with Godaddy a couple of us on the boards can get shit done if you have any problems.

Don't host your DNS/website with the same host. As for godaddy, I have been using it for years with zero complaints/issues. Use a few coupons and setup/check the auto renewal and it works fine. The total DNS control panel works quite spiffy. Hosting, I run a SIP PBX/ventrilo/few sites so I have a $20/month VPS linode (which works out cheaper then my semi static IP cable bill/phone bill). |

I've been perfectly happy using Dreamhost for my stuff. But I'm not a heavy poweruser either. Just hosting my personal site and whatever else files I feel like tossing into a folder for others to see.
fuser - what's wrong with using the same host for website/DNS?

i'd 2nd this unless you actually do with go with godaddy, then i'd go ahead and leave it all there. I use godaddy to purchase/handle DNS for all my domains and as far as I can tell the only downside is the intentionally confusing and misleading website that tries to opt you in to purchasing stuff you don't need. If you have been through the domain name purchase process before and are familiar with what you need (for example just the domain name without a single extra feature) then you should not find it overly difficult to opt out of the extras. I am going on my 2nd year with hostgator for hosting and am fairly pleased. My 1st year was up in January and I spent a fair bit of time researching a grid/farm based solution but pretty much came to the conclusion that the tech isn't quite there yet. It does seem to be getting close though and if it was just for my own purposes and I did not have to worry about uptime for clients i'd go grid with <a href-" http://www.mediatemple.com">mediatemple[/url] but that may be on the pricey side for what you want. |

Some less than ethical low end hosting companies have been known to hang on to your domain names if you try and leave. Not sure if that is fusers reason but it is mine. |

The unique thing about Gandi is that you own the domain and it is covered by French law.

I've hosted a site with www.1and1.com for about 5 years now. Really cheap... but my site is pretty low volume. Not sure how much they cost if you get signifigant traffic. They have an 800 for tech support and I don't think I've ever been on hold for more than a few minutes... which I think is amazing. |

Thanks guys. I went with Gandi in the end and they seem pretty solid. I bought the antipwn.com domain and I'll mess around with it tomorrow. I tried to give money to1and1 but my address isn't British enough for their billing interface.

I have been using ipower for about 5 years. If you buy in a year or 2 year block it is 6 or 7 a month. They up their base package disk and traffic quotas fairly regularly and automatically move you to what it is now. Comes with free domain listing if you buy a year or 2 at a time, and the name is registered to you.
I believe I have 300GB of disk space and 3TB of monthly transfer now. Also unlimited POP mail accounts. Has had a total of 23 hours of downtime in the 5 years I have had them, and that was because the main trunk to southern California went down, so the entire internet was fucked up that day.

Seconded on 1and1. Still with them five years on, though I'm not blogging anymore (they host a bunch of my stuff). Never a problem I didn't cause myself. But I had light needs. Gave me a place first for phpNews/phpBB3 and subsequently for the Wordpress software.
