Desktop, configured, current memory footprint: 8.2MB (roughly 1/10th of Windows Sidebar or whatever it's called). Behind spoiler, full size:

Ok, so it's not all text based, but it might as well be. As was pointed out in the Awesome Pictures Thread, there's a gadget thing called Rainmeter. It's designed so that monkeys can customize it and it's incredibly simple with the only nagging point being the shitty, convoluted right-click menu.

Where can I get it?
Rainy's - Latest Version .14 (64-bit available)

Where can I get skins?
Customize.org (Where I got mine from)
Deviant Art (Not Bad, but loaded with standard DA bullshit and ugliness)
SkinBase (This site is godawful, but there are skins, lots)
Skinventory (Lots available, no thumbnails, creepy, use at your own risk)

What skins did I use?
XtremAppLauncher
Furbino - Note: I have changed everything about this except the font, I like Arial.

Questions?

I shamelessly copied the one someone posted in Awesome Pictures. Editing the skins is a breeze.

Edit: Fixed your spoiler, was because you didn't have the permalink.

I can't get my weather thing to work.  I put in my location code but it's not loading now.

Meh.

Ya, for whatever reason that weather widget is geborked. Not sure why.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

The weather widget is working fine for me. I had to change both location codes, then further down change the names for the location buttons in a different field. Just search the text file for "Brno" and whatever the second one was. Then I clicked on the little arrow icon on the left end of the widget and it worked.

I've been using Samurize.  I like the minimalism.

Aha, that fixed it. I had missed the entries below. I basically just commented out everything with destination2 and destination3, since I ain't going nowhere.

Since I like to ruin things, everyone in the adult entertainment industry online -hates- Suicide Girls since the guy that runs it is an asshole thug whose contracts are so restrictive that if you're a model and sign with them you better enjoy not making shit since you can't do ANY work for anyone else for years. A lot of models actively avoid the place now, the new ones largely being people who get suckered into it.

That's also why most of the newer models on there are uh, ugly.

What are y'all using to get the mac style icons at the bottom? I mean, I assume you're not using macs.

I also use Stack Docklet. Which allows you to click on a folder icon and have it stem out the subfolders and files that are in that folder.

I'm sure with nominal effort, one could make a doc in Rainmeter with very little overhead - much less than other docks out there at least.

Samurize has a 1.7Mb footprint and Rocketdock is 7.5Mb, as I have them configured.  But keep on, keeping on.

Is Motherboard Manager still being updated?  Samurize can use speedfan for monitoring, which I know is still being actively maintained.

It's part of the HUD.Vision skin. The picture & wallpaper viewer with some minor tweaks. It essentially just shows whatever pictures are in X folder and all of its subfolders.

I prefer Winamp, but if I'd be willing to try it. The only problem I find, and this is from my assumptions and basic understanding, is that it's using windows Media buttons to play, pause..etc, so you still have to open Winamp to find a certain song.

From what I've seen in my little bit of digging, the ini file can specify buttons which can call any method in a plug-in dll. As far as I can tell you can do pretty much anything with Rainmeter as long as you can surface the functionality in a dll. I wish Steam had an externally accessible API; I'd love to have a Rainmeter widget for my Steam friends.

I'm a picky person, so it takes me time to get things the way I want them. After like 3 days of fucking around, I finally have my desktop done.

How did that take you 3 days? And Saturn? I thought the picture frame was pointing at your Yellow Fever folder.

Yes, I know I'm mean. Fallout did it to me.

I need to get a better video card. Every time I pop into a game my screen resolution changes, and my widgets all get squeezed together.

I don't think thats a function of your video card; that's a function of your game initially being brought up in a lower resolution. Change the game resolution and quit, re align the rainmeter junk, and relaunch the game then. your rainmeter stuff should stay put.

Also, I would adore an iTunes plug in. Not my music app of choice, but I has an iPhone cuz I'm an iSheep so I am too lazy to bother with another media player.

I use the windows-d function a lot to drop me to my desktop.  It's really annoying that it clears all of it away.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
