Fox is delaying further development and release of the announced-in-2006 MMO, Firefly.

It's a double whammy.  Not that I ever though this would see the light of day, but a guy can dream, right?  Alas.

This game is seriously going to suck if it even sees the light of day. Those Multiverse guys are a bunch of technologists not gamers.

Is this what we have come down to ? :(

I hope they do it justice and not coming out with an MMO just because they wanna make money. I've seen a whole lotta crap come down the pipe so please don't rape the Buffyverse just for a piece of the "WoW Pie"

Good to see that Buffy's still got enough appeal to make this possible, though. Now, when are we gonna see some Angel video games already?

If it's like Everquest, it would be like being a Scout (Watcher, maybe?), Warlock (Witch), Fighter (Slayer, Vampire), Healer (no idea). Whedon did tons of stuff with his characters, so I have faith :) that this could be good. Lots of Demons to pick from...even Cordie was half human/demon by the end of it all.

John Landau is/was the right hand chum of James Cameron on Avatar.  He presented at AGC '06 (some of u were there).  They made a big deal of Multiverse (all ex-Netscapers) because they invested in them.  I've yet to hear of a live Multiverse service that's up and making moolah.

People wanting a MMO to succeed because they liked the characterisation and dialogue of a TV series need help.

At least Star Wars had laser swords and Hero With A Thousand Faces derived mythos. "Buffy" / "Angel" / "Firefly" doesn't even have that.

Also: the Slayer class is just like the Jedi class. Does anyone want to be the powerless wise-cracker who isn't dead yet purely thanks to script convenience i.e. Xander?

There is plenty in the Buffy/Angel universe that would make for a great MMO, and you don't even have to come close to making justifications for Xander type classes.  The problem would be less how many slayer 'jedis' do you want in the game and more how do you stop everyone wanting to be a vampire with a soul, or feeling cheated if they can't be one.

Considering where the comics are at at the moment though With LA being a over run with demons and a slayer army patrolling the world there are plenty of points for conflict, you have alternate/hell dimensions that can open as well.

The style of the series lends it towards a lower spec/campy feel which would help the game as well.

If you want to make a humans vs demons hell invasion on earth kinda game the Buffy IP is as good as any to use

Xander stuck all his points into trade skills.

Looks like Fox put all of the Whedonverse up for MMO-orisation.

Buffy interests me a hell of a lot more than Firefly, but then I'd prefer the at school version of Buffy to Hell on Earth Buffy. HOE Buffy (now THERE'S an acronym!) has just run into the Superman effect - she gains power with every fight, so every enemy has to get more powerful to fight her. After she defeats Hell and punches Satan right in the face, I'm sure beating up an alternate version of herself that has punched her way into reality is just around the corner.

More like Xander was never around when everyone when grinding vamps for XP, then spent his time in general chat after falling too far behind.

Because Buffy lasted seven seasons while Firefly lasted not even half.  (Yes, I know why...  This is FOX we're talking about.)

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Can't say I'll play a Buffy game, 2 or 3d.  But there's a chance at me playing Firefly if it ever sees the light.  I just really enjoyed the show and feel that even without the characters they could make a game in that world that would work.

Except for the whole 'vastness of space, needing 100s of worlds to land on thing'.

That actually makes some sense. For one, they can give it away rather than having to charge a box fee for it which means they can self-publish if they wanted. For another, it's less of a risk to make a 2D Flash game than a 3D one. Unless they launch another Buffy TV series, they're almost going to need to give this one away with an MTX model. That's not a monsterously huge fanbase waiting for more video game goodness at all, much less an MMO.

Forget "Corey". Never trust someone who's a co-founder, Executive Producer and Director of Marketing all in one. I don't know the guy at all but that sounds like some serious control issues.  Ohhhhh, I see.

They are making both a 2d flash client and 3d dedicated client (according to the first article)

Right, but I interpreted both stories as meaning the 2D one comes first (safe bet, low/no price of entry) and the 3D one second (if the first is successful, if the IP can transcend platforms).

They sure have crappy technology for being technologists.

Why are game UIs and game tool UIs stuck in the 90s?

That's cause they aren't even gaming technologists -- they are a bunch of ex-Netscape people.
