I don't really want to see how shitty my avatar looks in 3d either.  Samson Savage is one ugly bastard.

Count your lucky stars that you're not a male Achura.

You're not Achuran, right?

Some CCP forum poster (might have been Eris) did once say that everyone would get to remake their avatars from scratch for ambulation. I think the reasoning was something like "it's a bit tricky to code any other way".

I'm sure there will be option to keep him they won't force you to change him. But thats good everybody gets a free avatar change for those who made crappy ones to start with and don't want to fork out $30 to revamp him/her.

I'm going to escape, come back, wipe this place off the face of the Earth, obliterate it and you with it.

Actually it sounded like they were going to force everyone to change them; you create your full body character and then they take a mugshot for the forums.  Otherwise it'll be somewhat hard to match the current mugshot / hairstyle that people have with the 3d head that the full-body will have.

But, we'll see.

Yeah, I remember it as being a forced remake because they couldn't code the new ambulation avatars to automatically remake your existing ones, presumably because all there is after the rendering has been done is a bitmap. I.e they haven't saved the parameters anyone used to make their avatars to begin with.

Can't find the original quote though, dammit.

Additionally, current avatars (at least some of them) look fairly cartoony, while captures from the Ambulation engine indicate a more (photo)realistic look of future characters and their avatars.

More photorealistic, sure.  Us having control over the camera angle or lighting when the shot is snapped, no.  Thus, everyone will be staring forward at the camera with their photorealistically crossed-eyes forward and a glaring light spot on their forehead.

The Ambulation avatars have different head models than the portrait ones. That's why you need to remake your avatars.

Hey, cowboy, why are you claiming your own blog as the original source? Please, we aren't your personal reader list. Removed.

Ah, fine. I thought that putting the link at the bottom of the post and quoting the entire thing (so people wouldn't have to click through) would be enough.

I believe that the approved term is "as camp as a row of tents", which has the advantage that it renders the user immune to PC vilification regarding the dreaded "homophobia."  The campest man I know is sitting opposite me in work, and is straight.

So the word "camp" can mean "gay looking" but not necessarily gay?

Quote
1. something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, self-consciously artificial and extravagant, or teasingly ingenuous and sentimental.
2. a person who adopts a teasing, theatrical manner, esp. for the amusement of others.
–verb (used without object) 3. Also, camp it up. to speak or behave in a coquettishly playful or extravagantly theatrical manner.

Some gay men in particular affect a camp manner, but that is the extent of the link.

Ah, OK.  I understand the usage of the word "camp" you are using now, but in the US (from all my experience at least) you would never refer to somebody as camp.  Campy is something you apply to movies or actors.  Like, "Bruce Campbell is a Campy actor" or something.  It's all movie related.  I'd never think to actually refer to somebody acting over the top as "camp".  And as such, didn't get the slight gay connection that could stem from that (and I live next to San Francisco!).  Learn something every day!

Yep, in the UK if someone is said to look "rather swish" then they are unusually well dressed or smart.

That's the polite version, when you're not being insulting.  "Flamer/Flaming" is the mildly insulting version of it.
