Assuming a game sells in the $50 range was is the cut the publisher typically takes? (When I say publisher I mean publisher + developer, basically everyone other than the store, the people who ship the games, etc)

I'd venture to say "a lot," because in my experience, the stores don't make a whole lot from selling new software.

Bear in mind when asking questions like these, that the publisher's cut isn't pure profit for a physical product. There's printing, disc pressing, manuals, transport and so forth.
